Land Guide. —We have received a copy of the Wellington Landed : Property Guide just issued. Besides a'great deal of useful information on land topics, details are given of a large number of .well known and very eligible properties which the publishers have for sale and lease in town andcountry. The Guide is distributed gratis and can be had by sending address to Messrs T. Kennedy Macdonald and Co,, Exchange Land Mercantile Auction Rooms, Wellington. South Star Hotel. —An adjourned meeting of the Blenheim West Licensing Committee was held at the Courthouse yesterday to further consider an application made by the police for the cancellation of the license of the South Star Hotel, recently destroyed by fire. Mr Rogers appeared for a number of residents of the locality in support of the application ; Mr M‘Nab was for Mr J. Moran, the licensee, and Mr John Conolly appeared for the Trustees of the property. Mr Rogers called Messrs S. J. Furness, J, Hay, R. H. Smale and T. Hustwick, residents of the locality, who deposed that the house had been improperly condutted, and was an eyesore to the neighborhood. Constable Stewart also gave evidence, and after a short retirement the Bench upheld the application and cancelled the license on the ground that the house had been improperly conducted. We understand that had the application been refused an application to transfer the license to Mr Ralph Andrews—a most desirable man—would have been made.

A Hunt Case. —A case of interest to local members of the Hunt Club was heard at the R.M. Court on Monday. Mr Paul Douslin, Secretary of the Marlborough Hunt Club sued one John Collett for £2 damages for trespass at two of the recent meets of the Club. Mr M‘Nab appeared for the plaintiff who deposed that he had arranged with Mr Paul, of Spring Creek, for tho exclusive use of his country for the purposes of the Club, that defendant was not a member of the Club and that he had been warned that as he was not a member and had not been introduced at the meet by a member he would be prosecuted as n trepasser if he followed the hounds. In spite of these remonstrances defendant had followed the hunt on two occasions. There was no appearance of the defendant. Judgment was given for tho amount claimed and costs. Mr M‘Nab said be would not ask for a professional fee as ho was a Liberal in politics and hunting men were Conservatives. The decision of the R.M. will probably have the effect of relieving members of the Hunt Club Of a nuisance in the shape of the presence at .their meets of huntsmen who are not members of the. Club

Footrall. —The final match of the season took place in M'Callum’s paddock on Saturday afternoon between the Marlborough and Union Clubs, and, after a wellcontested game, resulted in another victory for the former by one try to nil. Both teams turned out very strongly, and considerable improvement was shown by both since the beginning of the season. Dodson and MTver captained the respective teams. Mr Fisher umpired for the former and Mr R. M‘lver for the latter, whilst Mr Tovey gave every satisfaction as referee. Towards the end of the first spell Gaukrodger had tfye fiall passed to him, and, after a splendid run aovni the fjelfi, succeeded in passing every man and scoring a well-deserved try, but ow ing to the wind blowing in the opposite direction DeCastro was unsuccessful at the kick at goal. During the second spell Hathaway for the Blues and Thomson fqr the Reds secured “ marks,” but not to any advantage. The members of both teams deserve great credit for the friendly manner in which each game has been played throughout the season. For the Marlboroughs, Buick, Dodson, Poole, Guy, Hale, Empsen, Harris, Toung, Jellyman, Pasley, T. Mowat, L. Dodson, Hathaway, and DeCastro have played with great skill throughout, whilst Missen, Thomson, MTver, Redwood, D. and C. Fulton, Mowat (2), Coster, Tovey, and Carmine have worked well for the reputation of the Union Club.

It appeared that the cheque had been dishonored through defendant’s neglect in omitting to mark it for “ wages,” and as defendant admitted his indebtedness, judgment was given for amount claimed and costs, £2 2s.

Direct Shipping. —lt is a matter for congratulation amOng the residents of Marlborough that after a great deal of agitation the two shipping companies trading between London and New Zealand have at last recognised the import - ance of the district and decided to send their vessels to load at Picton direct for London and thero is every probability that during the coming season three vessels will be despatched from that port direct. The Shaw Saville and Albion Company’s ship “ Halcione ” is now there, and Mr J. E. Read, the local manager of the Non Zealand Shipping Company informs us that his Company’s fine ship “Wanganui” will arrive about the middle of next month. Tho latter Company have opened a branch in Blenheim and we understand intend erecting offices shortly, and we can therefore rely on their vessels visiting our port every season. In the face of the above facts it is well that we should see that every inducement is offered to encourage and foster the trade from Picton which must prove beneficial to tho district. The present charge for berthage accommodation at the Picton wharf is simply iniquitous and the agents of both companies are loud in their complaints, and we think they have just cause. No lay days ai’e allowed and one half-penny per ton for the first 150 tons and one farthing for every ton over that is now charged. For the Wanganui the charge per day amounts to £1 5s GJd, and for the “Halcione” £1 0s Ojd. Both the vessels will require to be alongside at least sixty days which will make the respective amounts for the former £76 13s 9d and for the latter ship £62 6s 3d making a total of £139 which will hare to be paid for the privilege of lying alongside a wharf in a port where thero is no Harbor Master and the captains are required to do all the work. In the interests of direct shipping we would urge the authorities to give this matter their immediate attention, and endeavor to arrange for a more equitable charge.
