‘.'Druids Anniversary.— A meeting of the Druids’ Anniversary Committee will be held at the Oddfellows’ Hall this evenffig at eight o’clock. ,

BoaooGH Council, a meeting of the Borough Council will be held this evening when a letter from the Manager of the’Bank of New Zealand, on the subject of the Corporations’ overdraft and other business will be considered. River Board. —A meeting of the River Board was held yesterd iy evening in the Borough Council Chamber, when there were present —Messrs Litchfield (chairman), Parker, Douslin, and C. Redwood. The only business was the presentation and adoption of the balancesheet.

Salvation Army. The Salvation Army turned out in great force yesterday evening in honor of the arrival of Adjutant Spratt, of Auckland, and Captain Ross, of Nelson. A cavalry corps headed their procession through the streets. This was lead by a standard hearer on a bay. horse, four men on grey horses followin'*. Eight or ten ot ier horsemen also took part in the procession, which was unusually large.

Ascension Day. Yesterday being Ascension Day, services were held in the morning in the Auglican Church, and in the morning and evening in the Homan Catholic Church. At the morning service in the latter, Fath r Aubrey celebrated Mass, and Father McKenna, of Wellington, pieached. In the evening Father Aubrey officiated at Vespers and Benediction,

Football. —The following will represent the Union Club in the match against the Marlborough Club on Saturday, at 2.45 pan., in Mr McCallum’s puldock : Messrs Tucker, Mclvor, Hood, Gentry, Thompson, Arrowsmith, Heywood, Harris, Messen, Fulton, H. Mowatt, J. Mowatt, Shand, Simmonds, Redwood. Emergencies: To vey, Coster, E. M elver, Murphy, Mowatt, and J. Scott.

Chamber of Commerce. —A meeting of the Committee of the Chamber of Commerce was held o.i Wednesday evening when there were present Messrs T. Horton, (president), W. Earp, and W. Litchfield. It was resolved that a specia meeting he held next Wednesday to consi ier a suggestion of Mr Litchfield's that the Committee ur„e on the Government, the desirableness of proceeding wit : the Dashwood Pass contract without delay and to provide for more frequent meetings of the Chamber. Lawn Tennis. —A general meeting of the Marlborough Club was held last evening at Messrs Holmes and Bell’s Farmer's Exchange, to consider the advisableness of laying down another asphalt court. After some discussion the motion was put and lost. It was decided to hold the annual ball on Friday, 10th June, tickets for which may be obtained by members from the following gentlemen : —Messrs Hull, Douslin, Thompson, Nairn, and Howard. The Bf.presentation Bill. —With reference to the recent tie in the division of the Comm'ttee of the House of Representatives, on the question of the future number of members of the House, the Wellington Evening Press says Mr Hamlin the Chairman of Committees, gave his casting vote for the retention in the Bill of the figures 91, and thus settled the question, though his reason for voting with the Ayes caused considerable comment, since he explained that his object was to allow of the matter being considered As a matter of fact the only way to have ob ained that re suit was for him to have voted with the Noes, when any figures might have been proposed in substitution for the 91, but not necessarily 7l- It is said that Mr Donald Reid voted with the Ayes by mistake, and thus lost the division for his side. The passage of the Bill through Committee, after the increasing of the numbers to the old strength again, was smooth and peacef d enough, Mr Hursthouse alone showing a tendency to obstruct.
