Gas Day.—Consumers are reminded that by paying their gas accounts to-day, they will be allowed discount. The office will be open this evening as usual. Okabamio. The annual school-treat to the children will be held at Ofearamio to day. The day’s sports will be suitably followed by a tea meeting and concert this evening in the school-room. The Blenheim Rifles.—The Blenheim Rifles parade this evening, at 7 p.m. for inspection of arms and accoutrements. Entrances close to-day for the second and third class prize firing competing and early this morning the Rifle match between the Blenheim, Nelson, Wanganui and Wellington Volunteers-is. to be fired ( Tenders.—The following tender* to fill two holes in Budge Street,were received by the Committee appointed by the Borough Council to open the same:— C. H. Ching L 3 15*, O. Bubb L 4 15s, T. Malone L 7, W. Atwood L 7, W. Gosling L 7 10s, J. H. Aberhart LlO, J Woosteer Ll2. The first mentioned tender was accepted. Meeting at GROVKTQWN.-At a meeting of ratepayers held at Grovetown to consider what steps should be taken for the better protection of the Opawa River, Mr Gearge Dodson presiding, it was resolved after considerable discussion—- " That Messrs Prichard, Murray, and John Cameron b« a deputation to wait on the Board at its next meeting, and bring up a report of what the settlers are willingjto do.” Cbickbt.—The Spring Creek C.G. will be represented by a team chosen from the following players in tomorrow’s Cap match against the Wairau C.C,C. Corder, H. Andrews, R. Cresswell, H. Sedgley, H. Masters, C. Matthews. H. Satherley, J. Hathaway, R. Hathaway, A Perkins, G. Withey, T. Morrin, R. Western, and C. Western, Umpire, Fred Dodson. The names of the Wairau C.C. team were published iu yesterday’s issue. Tho match is to com. menct atjhalf past ten and Jths stumps will be drawn at 7 p.m. At the meeting of the Wairau C.C. on Wednesday evening it was decided that a match between the first eleven of the Club and the next fifteen (with Trsweek) should be played on Saturday 18th. Extra Steamer.—Mr Liggins has received notification from the head office to the effect that the West Coast steamer leaving Nelson on Saturdays for Wellington and South will, during the summer months, call at Picton. This will no doubt prove a most serviceable arrangement for business people, who will be enabled to leave here on Saturday evening, do their business in Wellington on Monday morning and return again by Monday’s steamer to Picton. Through passengers will atso be enabled to reach Dunedin in a couple of day* aa Saturday night’s steamer is timed to reach Lyttelton at 7 o’clock on Monday morning, and passengers may then proceed by the Southern express reaching Dunedinat 8 o’clock on Monday evening. The new arrangement also giyea increased facilities for correspondence, as the Union Company’s steamers will now afford daily communication (via Picton and Blenheim with Wei ington. The Saturday night service also creates a necessity not hitherto' existing, for running _ a Sunday train between Blenheim and Picton ; without this Nelson passengers to Blenheim will not be able to finish their journey before Monday morning. The new leryice will commence from Saturday next when the Mahinapga will call at Picton on her way from Nelson to Wellington. 1

One or two verbal amendments were made and the draft was approved. The Council then adjourned. Fire Beigadb Appliances. —Messrs Shand Mason & Co. have written to tho Borough Council statiog that the new appliances for the Fire Brigade had been shipped by the “ Aorangi.®’ They should reach Blenheim in the course of a day or two. The Keilawabra Collision.— From the list of diowned by the shipping disaster off the coast of N'-"’ Wales it will be sen that Mr-, Wilson, a daughter of Madame Carandiai, was one of the victims. The unfortunate lady is a sister of Lady Nornun Campbell, of Highfield, Kaikoura, Sports Privileges. —At 2 o’clock thi* afternoon Messrs Sinclair & Macalister will auction the privileges iu connection with the Caledonian Sports on New Year’s Day, From the growing interest being taken in the Sports, it is likely competition will be unusually keen. The s.le will take place at the Auctioneers’ offices in Mark'd Place. Christmas Cards. —The windows of our shops remind us that Old Father Christmas is on his annual round. Yesterday we were shown by Messrs Card and Rabone soxie of the prettiest and most unique Christmas cards we have ever seen. There will be a show of a portion of the Christmas goods at. Messrs Card aud'Rabone’s shop this evening. Rating the Army. — A letter was read at the Borough Council last evening from Captain Robinson, of the Salvation Army, asking the Council to remit the rates charged on the Blenheim Salvation Army Barracks. The letter stated that in no other Borough of the Colony were rates charged on the Barracks as they are placed in the same category as churches which ate exempt from the payment of rates. The matter was deferred for consideration at the next meeting of tho Council. Accident. — Our Havolook correspondent writing on Wednesday says : —A serious accident occurred this afternoou, by which Mr Jame 9 Twidle was Dearly killed. He was breaking in a young horse at his farm when it bolted with a spring dray which collided against a , *tump, capsized and came right over on ' to the unfortunate man, the guard rail ' striking him with full force just below the chest but without breaking any bones. Fortunately he was seen by Mr Congdon, j who ran over qui kly nnd helped to. carry , him home. Dr Drury was soon in attendance and has done all he can to rei lieve the sufferer, but he still lies in a . dangerous state and is suffering intense . agony. Great sympathy is expressed for him as be is one of the most popular ’ farmers in the district. s The Taylor River.— At last night’s meeting of the Borough Council the following important letter was read from the Inspector of Works; —The Mayor and ‘ Council of the Borough of Blenheim. 3 Gentlemen,—l have the honour to report that the Wairau Road Board is causing a Redwood Patent Dam to be erected bed of the Taylor River which Will uvtueev I-AXAJ oucam vv» uaw Mvrof where the river lias run during the last winter. lam not sufficiently ac- . quainted with rivers to know what the f result will be, but lam of opinion that this work will cause the river to run more wpidly and if that turns out to be the case it will cause a great erosion to take place on that part of the Western ' boundary of the Borough owned by Mr T. Maddook, and if such ao erosion takes - place it may result that some of tbo TayI lor water may tuu down behind the bank , erected at the back of Mr Mowatt’s part j of section 6, Omaka. Nos r worthy, Inspector of Works.” The folt lowing letter on the same subject was received from Mr Barleyman :—" Sir,—l . beg to request that you will bring under the notice of the Borough Council the danger threatening the town in conse | quenco of the erection of a wire dam in an [ oblique direction across the bed of the . Taylor river. One of the probable conJ sequences which may follow this erection is the diversion of the Taylor river ' through Somhside. I have, etc., J. Barleyman. The Town Clerk, Blenheim.” The meeting being for a special purpose nothing could be done in the matter, but it was understood that a committee of the 1 whole Council would visit the Taylor river on Wednosdaymorning at 10 o’clock
