Mr Gillies has forwarded to the Antartic Exploration Committee the letter whichJSqe recently received from the Agent-General relative to the propoiod
expedition. It is understood that the Premier is not very hopeful of success, though efforts will be probably made to secure aid from the other colonics, and also from the Imperial Government. A very serious collision occurred off Shoal Haven Light on Saturday night between the ship Oromes, homewardbound, with a full cargo of wool, and the ship Ayeroua, inward from Liverpool. Both were seriously damaged. They were coming straight on with the light fall in view. The Ayeroua's starboard bow was stove in for a width of five feet, and she received other damage. _ The Orontes sustained injury very similar in character. The starboard men on the Ayeroua bad a miraculous escape. Fortunately they were not in their bunks at the time. The press in this and the adjoining colonies express a very general approval of the sentence on the Mount Bennie miscreants. Judge Windy ear’s summing up, was characterised with great ability, and he gave the prisoners not the slightest hope that the recommendation to mercy would be attended to by tho Executive. Sydney, Dec. 1. Severe shocks of earthquake, extending over a large area, were reported yesterday from Wagga, Gundagai, and elsewhere. They did not extend so far as Sydney, bu they were felt at Picton. At Yass two shocks were felt, shaking all the houses, cracking tho walls, and causing the ceilings to fall. A panic ensued, the people rushing from tlieir houses. The Government astronomer attributes the shocks to disturbances in Tasmania, but it is noticeable that about the same time Rotorua showed signs of renewed activity. A dedaide, Dee. 1. News from Teetulpa continues generally satisfactory, though a good many m* n have r< turned from the field disappointed and have proceeded to Melbourne Tho arrivals are, however, largely in ex cess of departures, and the steamers from the adjoining colonies have been crowded. The English, Scottish, and Australian Chartered Bank sent 500 ounces of gold to town as the result of tho first week’s purchases, but this is not supposed to represent anything like the total amount found. At present everything points to a permanent field, but the men are evidently largely in excess of the number who can find profitable employment,
