PICTON ROAD BOARD.

The first meeting of the newly-elected members of the Picton Road Board was held at the office in Picton on the l lth of May, when all tho members were present —Messrs Avis, O’Leary, O’Sullivan, Powick, Smith and Sfandeu MessrsStanden and O’Sullivan were proposed for the office of Chairman, when flic votes for cacli being equal in number, Mr O’Sullivan was elected by the casting vote, and took his seat as Chairman of the Board. The minutes of tho last meeting were read and confirmed. A renewal of Slaughtering Licenses was granted to Mr J. Ch ytor and Mr H T. Hawker. A lctt'-r was read from Mr Fred. Co’cmun, asking for compensation for alleged injuries sustained by his horse through a faulty bridge on Hunter’s Read. The Secretary was instrueted to reply to Mr Coleman, (hat the Board declined to accept any respon ibility in the matter, Mr John Healy, jun., wroto, asking who were responsible for the maintenance of the road at tho Sand Hills, Tua Marina, as lie had a dray damaged and a horse injured through defective work in that locality. The Secretary was instructed to inform Mr Healy that the Board was not liable. The Inspector was authorised lo call for tenders for a bridge at Lewis’ Folly, on the main ro d. Mr O’Leary moved, and Mr Smith seconded—That the rate for the current year be one half-penny in the pound on all properties as shown in the Valuation Roll for tho district. —Carried. Messrs O’Sullivan and Smith were appointed to sign cheques on behalf of the Board. Accounts for £lll 19s were passed for payment and the business ended. The ordinary monthly meeting of the Picton Road Board was held in Blenheim on Saturday last, when all the members were present. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. A ballot was taken, when it was found that Messrs Avis, O’Leary and Smith would be the members of the Board to retire at the end of the first year.

A letter was read from Mr John Healy, jun., claiming compensation to the extent of £ll 12s 6d for damage sustained by his horse and dray through an alleged defect in the road at the Sand Hills. As the subject hacl been discussed and disposed of at the last meeting of the Board, the letter was simply received.

A circular was received from the 1 'elorus Road Board, asking the co-operation of this Board in trying to get communication with Kelson, by way of the Rai Valley, to connect with Blenheim, instead of by way of the Topbouse, as proposed by the Government. Moved by Mr O’Sullivan, seconded by Mr Smith, and carried —That this Board co-operate with the Pdorus Road Board in the manner suggested. A 1-tter was read from some ratepayers at Para, asking the aid of the Board in obtaining a road to the south of the Para railway station. Moved by Mr O’Sullivan, seconded by Mr Powick, and carried— That, owing to want of funds and want of knowledge of the exact position of tho state of matters with respect tc the publicroad in tho locality, the request be not entertained at present. Moved by Mr O’Sullivan, seconded by Mr Powick, and carried —That the Secretary write to the member for the district, and request him to use his iniluence towards having a road opened into the Pukaka bush, where there is some 2GOO acres of valuable bush land which cannot at present be utilised for want of facilities for its employment. Mr O’Leary moved, nud Mr Powick seconded —That tho member for the district be communicated with, and requested to urge upon tho Government the necessity for making a practicable road from Knitnna to Tun Marina. —Curried. Moved by Mr O’Sullivan, secon led by Mr Smith, and carried —That the Board's banking account be transferred from Picton to Blenheim. Mr O'Sullivan moved, and Mr Powick seconded—That the Inspector of Works bo authorised to obtain 1500 feet of birch timber for the use “f the Board.—Carried. Moved by Mr O’Sul'ivan, seconded byMr Smith, and carried—That tho Secretary write to the Mayor of Blenheim to ascertain whether a room could be obtained in the Government Buildings for the Board’s meetings. Accounts amounting to £2ll lGs lid were passed for payment, and the business closed. • .
