Melbourne, Jnro 7 The Victorian Government have received no official i form lion cottc ruing the rumoured French annexation of the New Hebrides Group The Argus and Age refer, ring to the subject this morning are both inclined to discredit the report. Sydney, June 7. The French war steamer Dives, which recently left for the New Hebrides, took a number of troops and a quantity of building material. Mr Layard, B itish Consul at Noumea, has forwarded a despatch to His Excellency the Governor, Lord Carrington, in which he informs his Excellency that the French war vessel Dives, left Noumea in fighting trim, having taken on board three months provi ions. The Dives was bound for the N.< -•) Hebrides, where it is intended to hoist the French flag. No vessel was allowed to leave Noumea within forty eight hours from the moment of the departure of the war ship. Lord Carrington has telegraphed the substance of the despatch to Earl Granville, Secretary for the Colonies.
