RAGWORT IN LIME
BAGS HELD RESPONSIBLE Following upon the suggestions made by the Matamata County Council earlier in the year that ragwort seed was accidentally distributed with lime supplied from certain areas to farmers and representations that this possibility should have official investigation, a letter containing a report upon the analysis of the lime was received from the Minister of Agriculture at the meeting of the council on Friday. Samples of the lime supplied dur-
ing March and April had been collected from the lime companies and farmers, but no seed was found. From further investigation it appeared that the bags used to pack the lime may have been the cause of the distribution of seed, as some farmers were in the habit of collecting ragwort plants in full bloom, the plants being pulled and carted in bags which were not always carefully emptied. Some of these bags later found their way back ,to the lime companies. The companies, however, realised the position and were taking all precautions to prevent seed from being distributed in this manner.
