Basketball.

MATAMATA COURTS Official Opening The opening of the new basketball courts of the Matamata Basketball Association, which are situated on the High School grounds, took place on Tuesday afternoon. Congratulatory speeches were made by Mr. A. M. A. Wright, chairman of the High School Committee, and the Mayoress (Mrs. W. A. Gordon). Apologies were received from the headmaster (Mr. B. M. Kibblewhite) and the Mayor (Mr. W. A. Gordon). Miss A. McKeen, captain of the Matamata representative team, presented the Mayoress with a bouquet, following which Mrs. Gordon decleared the courts open and threw the ball up for a captain’s v. vicecaptain’s match. The afternoon was devoted to a Yankee tournament for which 10 teams, comprising 90 players from Thames, Waikino, Te 'Aroha and Matamata entered. At the conclusion of play, Mr. Campbell, manager of the Waikino team, complimented the home association on the fine courts and for the hospitality extended. ..-Details of play were as follows: — Group One First Round. — Thames A 6, Waikino 3.
