MATAMATA TOWN DISTRICT.

BOARD MEETING. The fortnightly meeting of the Matamata Town was held on Tuesday night. Present: Messrs. J. * Buchanan (chairman), J. Mclntyre, ;W. J. Stanley, Ivan Black, J. H. I'Hawes, W. S. Ruthe and A. Stewart. lln attendance: The clerk, Mr. C. G. | Lucas, and the foreman of works, Mr. A. Ogilvie. I Adjusting Accounts. The Matamata County Council ren- [ dered an account for interest on Te 1 Aroha and Cambridge bridge loans, and maintenance on the latter totali ling £59 4s 2d. No account had been | rendered since 1919. The clerk intimated that there was a contra-account, in connection with the public pound, and the latter amount would go a long way towards offsetting the former.—Adjustment to be made. Heavy Traffic Pool. The clerk reported that under the new adjustment of heavy traffic pool made at Hamilton, the board was getting over £7O less this year than last. The chairman moved that the board get in touch with other bodies similarly situated, with a view to having the old basis reinstated. —Carried. Freight Refund. The Railway Department forward- 1 ed a cheque of £59 Is 3d freight re-' fund on metal carriage. Received, with satisfaction at the result of about eight months’ negotiations. / Foreman’s Salary. Foreman A. Ogilvie wrote: “ As it is now a year and seven months since I took up duties with your board, I would respectfully ask you to review my salary, with a view to giving me an increase in same. I would also bring before your notice that for some considerable time- I have found it necessary to dse'ihy car in ecution of my., duties.' During the past six months some means of conveyance has been absolutely necessary. As I have been running my car at my own expense, I would ask you to consider the making of an allowance. “ In conclusion, I would ask you if I am entitled to any annual leave.” The board granted a car allowance of 10s a week; fourteen days’ holiday allowed per annum; salary increased from £5 15s to £6 a week. .tv . '' Town Hall Orchestra. The following applications were received for the position of town hall orchestra: 1. Miss Pennell pianist, Mr. C. A. Pennell saxophonist, Mr. A. Bragg cometist. 2. Mr. R. White cornetist; no associates. 3. Mr. P. C. Ingham .pianist, Mr. H. S. Lucas violinist, Mr. M. Bates , cornetist. I The chairman reported that a me- j chanical orchestra propostion had been offered to the board, similar to those operating in several picture theatres. A demonstration was to be given. It would save about £7O a year in salary. Records would,have to be bought. “ Personally, I’ve got no time for these musical mechanical contraptions,” said Mr. J. Mclntyre. | The board decided to “ bide a wee, [and to appoint the orthodox orchestra of the featherless biped species instead of the musical Robot in the meantime. The hall committee had considered the applications, but was non-commit-tal, having “no recommendation to make.” v No. 3 combination was successful. Huia Street. Mr. Stanley drew attention to the state of Huia street, which had never been formed. Complaint had been made that, owing to the road being so rough, cars were usually driven along the footpath, to the danger of children: and other pedestrians. The foreman was- instructed to form the road. /'■ The Ovals. The foreman was instructed to sow grass seed on the oval plots in Tower road, and to fence round. Foreman’s Report. Foreman A. Ogilvie reported as follows: “ During the past period various street surfaces have been' repaired, including Arawa, Hetana, Tainui and Elizabeth streets. The

These places have been widened 'but, ana the banks cut down, making approaches to same reasonably safe. “A start has been made on footpath at the lower end of Tower road, There will be considerable spoil from this work, and same is being used to bank up and widen No. 20 main highv;ay. “ Bitumen surfaces have been repaired where required.”—Adopted.
