FAMILY CENTRE WITHOUT BOOZE

On May 11th 1978 a former cinema in Symonds Street will be opened as the first Family Centre without liquor.

Attractions will be cultural groups, Polynesian live bands, disco, movies, pool tables and pinball machines.

The centre will be opened on Thursday 11th at 7.00 p.m. and that night admission will be free to the public. From then an admittance .is $2.50, children $1.50. All children up to the age of weleve will be admitted free. This decision was made after a survey of Auckland streets one Sunday morning of the amount of children unable to enter discos because of the ridiculous price of $3.00.

The opening of this centre is only possible with the help of interested, ordinary people from the streets, or “grass roots level” of all ethnic groups, and a special thanks to the Chinese Community for their help and understanding. All proceeds after groups and bands are paid will be deposited in a Trust Fund for the building of a true Licenced Family Centre. All are welcome, the old, the young and the families. Refreshments will be obtainable. The actual object of this centre is to be open, eventually 24 hours a day, seven days a week for the use of the people.
