Easter with Benson
The first show performed in New Zealand by George Benson was something else. For those that were lucky enough to catch George’s concert at His Majesty’s, “Something Else — just about sums it up.
After a cool intro from his back-up band, Benson proceeded to prove his ability to turn the crowd on to “The most refined form of Blues-Jazz-guitar playing around”. According to one lucky lady,
‘People walked up the aisle, danced, and then sat down — in the aisles. Anyone with a camera just went on up and sat down. He played all the songs everyone wanted to hear. After Masquerade he walked off stage and the crowd went hysterical calling out for ‘Breezing’. Well, he came back on the breezed into five more numbers that left everybody funking to the first George Benson voation in New Zealand. A lot of Polynesian faces, young and old, proved that George Benson is not only a star on Broadway but he sure can play that there guitar in the streets of Auckland any ole time he wants. By Tina
