At nearly 75 Tumanako Reweti (P), better known as Aunty Hope, is still very active in her community. The constant glow on this k uia’s (old woman’s) face is a delight to anyone who comes in contact with her. Along with her ißß)lvement in com•nity work she very bly and lovingly takes care of two mokopimas (grandchildren), Tania Tumanako Kirikau, (6) and Mario Kirikau,(4'/ 2 ). Part of the extended family are two pet dogs. Champ and Tina. To hear her talking to the dogs you would think they were people. This describes her very well, as her cup of aroha (love) seems to be full to overflowing. She was born at Orakei, March 2nd 1903. She is one of the kaumatuas “(elders) of Orakei Marae. She identifies with the protestors at Bastion Point, those arg my mokopunas!! Her present home in Grey Lynn is adorned with gifts from those who love her. Recently she was awarded the Silver Jubilee Medal. She already holds a British Empire medal for her community work, and services to the Country. In regard to the coming Auckland City Council by-elections, she, as a Maori kuia, is a keen supporter of candidate, Syd Jackson, “He is our man, he has the youth, knowledge, approach, humility, and he is a very good speaker for the people. I know he’s a good fighter, especially for the rights of the Maori. He is endowed with the mana of his people!! And on a joking note she ends. It goes with the mana of the newspaper!!”
