NEWS OF THE WEEK

The Wakatipu Ski Club will hold its opening day at the week-end at the Coronet Peak saddle. Arrangements are being made for transport to the place and subject to the weather conditions being favourable, as they are at present, there should be good sport for all who take part. Mrs J. S. Royds will be pleased to answer any enquiries. The levy on rabbit skins which has just come into force apparently affected the receiving dates for the last Dunedin rabbit skin sales. Rabbit trappers will therefore be glad to learn that the date which has been fixed for the next sale will be July 11. Southland raised £4876 last week in war savings against a weekly quota of £3llO. This was the 65th consecutive district success. Among towns which exceeded their quota was Queenstown and Arrowtown. The weather during the past week has been more settled. The postal staff sorted the mail which was available on Sunday morning. Ptc. Olwen Robinson and Pte. W. Summers will be given a public welcome in the Garrison Hall this evening. There was a fair attendance at St. Peter's Guild progressive euchre last evening. The winners were Mrs McIntyre and John Walsh, jr., and consolations went to Miss T. Walsh and Geo. Nelson. The annual meeting of the Wakatipu •Football Sub-Union was held at Arrowtown early in the week. The election of office-bearers took place and there was a general discussion on the prospects for the season, but owing to absence of senior players no fixtures were made. A report will appear in next issue. The Red Cross Committee desire to thank the following for knitting and sewing: Mesdames Jardine, Clayton, Thompson, Hanrahan, Fix, Johnson, T. Houston, Murchison, Tomkies, Scheib, Mathewson, Misses Henderson, Geisow, Dawson and White and knitters at Arrowtown and Glenorchy.
