ONE HUNDRED HORSES

EXPORTED FROM BRITAIN IN HALF-YEAR

Exactly 100 horses were granted export certificates for shipment overseas from Britain in the first six months of this year. They went to Argentina, ■ the Bahamas, Barbados, Brazil, Cana-' da, Federated Malay States, South Africa and the United States.

Thoroughbred stalions, mares and geldings numbered <59, and there were 11 polo ponies, (5 hunters, 5 Cleveland Bays, 4 hackney ponies, 2 Clydesdales an Arab stallion and two other horses.

Only 16 of the thoroughbreds arc geldings, and will be used solely for racing. The 53 stallions and mares will infuse fresh strains of British blood, recognised to be the best in the world, into...overseas stud farms. This will also be the main use of the Arabs and Cleveland Bays. Arab blood, the English strains of which compare favourably with that produced in the original home of the breed, transmits to half-bred stock its own qualities of soundness, endurance, courage and beauty of form. The Cleveland Bay breed, descended from the old English packhorse, has great stamina and robustness, and is valuable for crossing with the thoroughbred to procure the best type of hunter. The hacking ponies and hunters, sent to the United States, arc geldings, but nine of the polo ponies, which have all gone to the Bahamas, are breders. They combine the quality and speed of the thoroughbred with the courage and docility of

the Arab and the hardiness of the native English pony. The two Clydesdale geldings are of interest as the only representatives of British heavy draught horses.

Punch's famous advice to those about to marry was Don't. E. L. Btevenson’s advice to ladies contemplating matrimony was ‘never marry a non-smoker.' Charles Eeade, the novelist, who flourished before cocktails, night-clubs, votes for women, and the intellectual superiority of the ‘softer sex’ were invented counselled ladies to encourage their husbands and iiances’ to smoke all they wanted to. Daring advice at a time when women hadn’t learned to smoke and hated—or said they hated —tobacco. Ah well, the world grows wiser everyday And it is becoming generally recognised that, given the right baccy, smoking, so far from proving harmful, is often positively beneficial. Unfortunately, however, the right baccy is not so common as it should be — save in New Zealand. There are five brands: Navy Cut No. 3, Pocket Edition, Siverhead Gold, Desert Gold and Cut Plug No. 10. Not one of them contains any nicotine worth mentioning; all are famous for their splendid quality. They arc toasted! —and quite harmless. The/ don’t effect heart or throat, and are as pure as they are delicious. Coughs and colds are in the air. Lay-by aid without delay— Septic ’flu needs instant care In the most effective way. If the treatment you lay by Quickly soothes the throat and chefct Then you’ll know the reason why Woods’ Great Peppermint Cure is best.
