AN UNLUCKY PEER

LIFELONG MISAPPREHENSION. Singularly iimlucky has been Lord Durham in the matter of M.C.C. membership. All his life he has been under the impression that lie was a candidate, and only recently it was found that his name had never been put down. Ho is a.n enthusiastic cricketer, president of the Durham County Club, and also runs a local team at his seat in Sussex. Ho entertained the Australian cricketers recently at Lambton Castle. It is, of course, impossible these days to join the M.C.C. under a considerable number of years. Tin the old days hoys were put down as soon as they were horn. Now, there is a rule that no one can ho proposed under fifteen. This means that, unless a boy develops into a first-class cricketer, old ago must overtake him before lie can hope for membership.
