Municipal Council.

The monthly meeting of the Queenstown Borough Council was held in the Library on Thursday, Oct. 6. Present:

The Mayor (J. Edgar), Councillors Givin, Anderson, Sutherland, Simson, Craig, Mayne, Monson and Petterssor.

The Town Clerk stated that the bank overdraft was £179 lis 4d as per piss book on the table. On the motion of Cr Gavin and A. E. Auderson it was resolved—That th 6 resolution passed by the Council on the 12th September, 1910, namely, v that sections 9 to 14, block xv, town of Queenstown, be purchased at the price of £45, as a site for the acetylene gas installation, be rescinded. It was further resolved on the motion of Crs Sutherland and S. B. PetterssonThat Mr Daniel Mcßride's offer of this date to Bell to the Corporation, sections 9 to 13, (both inclusive), block xv, town of Queenstown, for the sum of £42 10s and to remove the stable off of section 9 within four days from this date, be accepted. Cr Mayne proposed and Cr Sutherland seconded—That section 9 to 13, Block xv, town of Queenstown, bo the site fir the erection, of the acetylene gis buildings and works. Cr Gavin moved as an amendment, seconded by Cr« Craig pro forma— That sections 9 to 11, block xv, be the site for the erection of the acetylene gas housf, and generator. On the amendment being put only the* proposer and seconder voted for it. The resolution proposed by Cr Mayne was put as the substantive motion, and was carried, Councillors Gavin and Craig voting against. It was resolved on the motion of Crs Gavin and Anderson—That the contract or agreement between tho Mayor, Councillors and burgesses of the Borough of Queenstown, and the New Zealand Acetylene Gas Lighting Company, Ltd., relating to the installation of an acetylene gas plaut, supply and service for the Borough, shall, when prepared by the Borough solicitor and approved by the lighting committee, be executed on behalf of the Borough and be sealed with the common seal of the Borough by the Mayor andCr Gavin.

F. Mcßride wrote stating that Mr D. Mcßride hid informed him that' the Corporation had purchased from him sections 9 to 13, block xv, (Queenstown, and as he would be required to remove his stables off section 9, would the Council sell him section 13, adjoining his own sections 14 and 15, same block, so that he could remove the stables thereto; or he would be prepared to .lease same for a term witli a right of renewal. It was resolved on the motion of Crs Monson and Sutherland—That Mr F. Mcßride's application to occupy section 13, block xv, Queeustowu, be not entertained. Cr Gavin voted against the resolution.

The Sute Library, Beeston Oval, London, wrote forwarding a copy of "B icon's Shakespeare," to the library, another copy could be obtained for the library if required by paying the postage, Bd.

The Clerk was instructed to write acknowledging receipt of the copy, thanking tho donor, Sir Edwin Dunnery Lawrence, Bart., and stating that one copy would be sufficient.

A. and T. Burt, Ltd., wrote intimating that they were just landing a large quantity of all sizes of galvanised tubes from i to 4 inches. -Received.

The secretary, Southland Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, forwarded the monthly list of persons receiving aid from the Board.—Received.

M. O'Brien, nurseryman, Winton, wrote intimating tlut he had forwarded in accordance with order from the Couucil a number of pinus iusignis, spruce and oak.

The Forestry Committee reported that the trees had arrived in good order and had been planted out by the dayman and W. Downey. W. Fraser, M.P., wired that he had succeeded in obtaining a copy of the plans of che new steamer for Lake Wakatipu and asked the Mayor to permit same to be exhibited in the Council Chamber or any convenient place for the public to inspect. A second wire stated that tenders lu'd to be submitted to the Tenders Board and then to the Cabinet so that nothing would be made public for nearly a week.

The Mayor stated that the Town Clerk had exhibited the plans of the new steamer in the window of Hallenstein's buildings, and that tenders for building the steamer lias been accepted. T. L. Oswin, officer-in-charge of the Valuation Department, Invercargill, wrote re the Council's enquiry as to the cost of a copy of the valuation roll. He had submitted the mntter to the Valuer General and had to inform the Council that the law makes no provision for supplying rolls to local authorities other than those voting on the capital or unimproved value system. —Received. Sir J. G. Ward forwarded a urgent message re the proposal to celebrut* the anniversary of Dominion day on Monday, the 23rd September, by having a parade of the territorals in various towns and districts in the evening. The Mayor stated that the occasion was observed by the volunteers and band parading the town on the night specified. H. Duston wrote that he had received an account from Mr R. W. Geisow for £1 13s 8d for water pipes thut go across the street to his garden. He did not think it was right to charge him with the pipes that cross the street. He was willing to pay for the pipe from the stop cock to the garden, but the pipes that go from the stop cock to the main piue across the street belong to the Borough Council.

The Mayor said that some time ago the Council had decided that all expenses for laying jii the water from the main for irrigation purposes must be borne by the occupiers and therefore the Council could not admit of any liability. J. B. McLeely, Inspector of Nuisances, wrote re the waterfall in the post office property in Horn Creek, drawing the Council's attention to the fact that Mr Algie, after receiving notice from him on the Bth September had not removed the obstruction complained of. A'so that Mr Mouson had fenced in the right-of-way, between sections 7 and 8, block 15. The Town Clerk was instructed to write to headquarters regarding the Horn Creek nuisance. The matter of Monson's fencing the right-of-way was left in the hands of the Mayor. The Inspector of Nuisnnces reported that Mr Mouson had removed the fence between the Corporation yard and his leasehold and ho asked for instructions.— The diyman was instructed to remove all timber and old iron from the said section. J). Price, Gore, wrote re the Council's

letter re rates. He had no money to pay the rates, as he told them before. If the Council cared to ask Mr McDonald he might pay the rates. The Town Clerk was instructed to take action (through the Borough's solicitor) for the recovery of the overdue rates. A similar instruction was also given re Richard Nesbit for overdue rates.

It was resolved on the motion of Cr E. Monson and Craig—That accounts amounting to £lsl 19s lid as examined by the Finance Committee lie passed for payment.
