HEAD OF LAKE.
(From Our Own Correspondent.)
Glenorchy, 23rd ?*pr,
The last few days have taken us back into winter again. The hills are very white again and snow fell several times even on the Hits, though it did not lie more than a few minutes.
On Sunday last Mr Philps' hooie was burnt down. The fire started at half paßt four in the afternoon while he was across at Mr Jack Campbell's—less than KO yards away. The outbreak originated in the bedroom and it was found impossible to entpr it, but Messrs Jack Campbell, Harry Campbell and Bowler were abb. to save all the kitchen furniture, at considerable risk to themselves, as the flames were bursting through the bedroom door. A few minutes after the work was done the whole door burst through with t roar into the kitchen. Very speedily the whole pl<ce was enveloped in flame, and burnt fiercely, fanned by the strong wind. A fire bad been started in the stove and unfortunately it was too hot to be banditd. What caused the tire is not known. The house was owned by Mr Frank Wells and, it is auid, was insured for £SO.
