A combined football team consisting of the Public and Convent schools played a match against the shop assistants yesterday. The latter team were mostly juniors employed in some capacity or other in local businesses. The match resulted in a win for the former by 20 points (6 tries/ one being converted) to 4 points (a potted goal) The first match of the English football tour through the Dominion was played at Masterton on Saturday last against Wairarapa Bush districts. The Englishmen secured an easy victory, having scored 17 points to 3. The provincial team lacked combination whilst the passing and foot play of the Englishmen was a special feature and went a long way towards Bucoess. They held themselves partly in reserve in the second spell. The Home full-back is spoken of as a particularly active player. There were two or three slight casualties which were principally confined to the players in the Home team. The second match will be played at Wellington on Saturday next.
