HUNTING THE OCTOPUS.

The courage and enterprise of modern scientists are well exemplified ir the case of two naturalists who have made the octopus their particulai studj-. One of these gentlemen employs himself in hunting the octopus ir Beemuda. A powerful swimmer aw: possessed of rare nerve, he dives into the sea, and, single-handed, seizes any specimen of the "devil fish " which he can master. He tlipn drags his capture to the surface, where it is drawn into a boat which waits above, care being taken not to mutilate it. The daring hunter has had at least one narrow escape fr<Jm the larger kinds of octopus. The other scientist is less venturesome. He is a Frenchman, whose hunting is conducted in a diving suit off the island of Corsica. But even with this advantage he has had more than one narrow escape from death.
