LATE HOME FROM THE CLUB.
| A South of Ireland town once possessed a Bishop who always insisted upon his family being at home by nine o'clock at night. One evening, however, one of his sons allowed some festivity to tempt him into remaining out until past the midnight hour. When he returned he rang violently at the door-bell, but the porter only yelled out his refusal to disobey the Bishop's commands. At last the delinquent thought of conciliating the man with a sovereign. The sight of gold was sufficient. Just as he was entering the house, the son purposely dropped his handkerchief, and requested the porter to secure it for him. As the servant stepped outside the house to comply with this demand the door shut noisily upon him. "Oh, yer honour," said he. "Sure ye wouldn't lock me out ?' t ' "Indeed I will," replied' his tormentor ; "the Bishop hates late hours. But 1 tell you what, I'll give you admittance for a sovereign." There was no alternative for the porter, and he had to return the money.
