REVIEW.

STALKY & CO. (By Rcdyahd Kipling.) Whitcombe and Tombs, Dunedin. This now famous'work has lately been added to the Indian and Colonial Library list of publications. It is a series of short stories illustrative of boy life in college, and is written in the sparkling and racy manner so familiar to readers of this world-famous author.- It will be read with interest by young and old for " boys will be boys," and by those who have known the scholarly atmosphere of college, as well as those who, now passing thrdugh the intermediate grades, look forward to the time when they will be numbered amongst the alumni. It is very characteristic of the wilder spirits found in every college, but it must ra taken only | in that light, and not as an index to the general state of affairs within the precincts of college. It would not be advisable for the coming alumni to learn the choice slang of Stalky and ,Co. under the impression that "it might come in handy," fof- the result of its use in the presence of master or prefect would be —most emphatically—rustication. The actions of Stalky and Co. are characterised throughout with the thoroughness and vivacity of English schoolboys, and though the Co. rejoiced in wild pranks, they did not entirely low sight of the fact that their college life would determine whether they should wear the Queen's uniform and fight for the Flag, whether they should join one of those professions which require high intellectual abilities, or whether they should be lost sight of in shops, banks, or warehouses. The book, though telling of audacious practical jokes, and redolent as it is of vigorous slang, nevertheless, to the observant, preaches the motto of King Aired—" Esto quod es," (be what thou art). Price—paper 2s 6d, cloth 3s 6d.
