DESPONDENT PREACHERS.

A Presbyterian elder, Mr Simon Morrison, spoke very sorrowfully at a Ballarat (Vic.) Conference on the state of religion the other day. The prayer meetings, he said, were largely attended by women, but few men put in an appearance. The desecration of the Sabbath was also increasing, and every Sunday hundreds of young men and women were to be seen on the streets or riding or driving into the country. A ball was recently held in Ballarat, which was attended by a number of communicants, who, on the following Sunday appeared at the communion table. Christ would not go to a ball. The Rev M. C. Hart deplored the fact that instead of to Bible Class

meetings, young men flocked to gymnastic classes. But though he was convinced the ball room and the communion table could never go together, yet they were not all saints in the church, nor sinners in th? ballroom.
