Dunedin, this day. No local business was transacted at Wednesday's Land Board meeting. At the otago Education Board meeting yesterday the appointment of a truaiiv officer was referred to tbe committee to obtain information 011 the subject. Ota.uo beat Wellington in the football match here easily by six points to three on Wednesday. There were 6,000 persons present. Heavy and welcome rain on the West coast, North Otago, and South Canterbury yesterday. The Auglo-Auitralian Bank, Mel lion rne. and the Australian Mercantile Loan and Guarantee bank, Sydney both stopped payment on Wednesday. Their connection with the British bank is said to be the causes. Mr K. T. Gillon, editior of the Wellington Post is seriously ill. LATEST. 4 p.m. Mr John Aitken Connell, formerly of Connell and Moodie, Dnnedin, committed suicide by shooting himself this morning at Riverhead, near Auckland, lie opposed Mr Mitchelsou for the Eden seat in Parliament. ♦ LATE PARLIAMENTARY. Sir George Grey intends to move an amendment in the Franchise Bill to abolish the Upper House and substitute a Chamber of women. The Premier states, in reply to Sir John Hall, that he will take charge of the female Franchise Bill, which, not being a Government measure, all members can exercise a free vote. The Libel and Bankruptcy Bills are not likely to be gone on with. Tne Minister of Lands has promised Mr J. Macintosh, to put £IOO on the estimate for construction of a jetty at Lake Te Anau, and a moderate sum to put in order, tbe road between Lakes Te Aiiau and Manauouri. The Postmastei-General before replying to the United States enquiry, as to whether New°Zraland will assist in the institution of a fast fortnightly service with Frisco calling alternately at Aucklaud and Wellington, wants to know whether Britishowned vessels will be allowed to participate in the service. Up to the present the steamship companies decline to renew the direct mail service on terms proposed, namely, 12s poundage. The business of the session will punctually close in al>out three weeks. It is stated that Mr Perceval, member for Christchurch, and chairman of committee, will be the new Agent-Geneial. The Labor Bdls Committee in the Legislative Council have given the Ship Home Bill its death blow. In the Legislative Council yesterday the Selectors Re-valuation Bill was read a second time and referred to the Waste Lands Committee. lu the House the Law Practitioners Bill has at length been passed. The Friendly Societies Bill has been considered in committee yesterday, and it was agreed to make it retrospective. The Gaming and Lotteries Bill was under discussion when the House rose. The Electoral and Women's suffrage Bills are to be taken on Monday. The Hon J. M'Kenzie has been suffering from influenza, but was better last night.
LATEST. It is anticipated that neither the Shop Hours Bill or Factories Bill will pass the Council. A clause is to l>e ad tied to the Municipal Corporations Bill exempting libraries and such institutions from rates. The Agent General-ship is still unsettled, Government persist in this statement, Mr Buckley's name is again mentioned. The Land and Income Bill comes on in the upper house on Wednesday, when a terrific onslaught is expected. LATEST CABLE NEWS. News from Samoa states that all is quiet there.
