MUNICIPAL COUNCIL.
A meeting of the above body took - place in the Council Chambers on Friday, November 6th. Present—The Mayor, and Cf® Crofts, Boyne, and M'Bride. Mr W. Geisow, having signed the necessary declaration previous to taking office, was introduced by the Mayor to the Council m Councillor for South Ward. The minutes of previous general and special meetings, together with the proceed' ings of the elections, were read . fipd confirmed. . The outgoing correspondence consisted or letters to the Provincial Secretary, protest* iug against the alienation of the CommoL%gd to the secretary of Moke Creek and Moon* light Mining Association in same matter; to Mr J. S. Worthington, appointing him as arbitrator, on behalf of the Council, re the Waterworks j and to Mr J. W. Robertson notifying such appointment, .. . The lucoming correspondence comprised letters from Municipal Council, Arrowtown; from J. Wenkheim; Secretary of Cemetery Committee; Messrs Gillies and Street, stating they had paid the fee on the licence to occupy the Islands, and had forwarded the same, which was issued to Mr T. G. Betts as Mayor. A letter was also read from the Town Clerk, requesting leave of absence; and from his Honor the Superintendent, as Chairman of the Central of Health, referring to section 15 of the Public Health Act, 1872, and requesting that, in compliance with the provisions thereof, the Council would furnish the Board with a report as to the condition of the Queenstown municipality. On considering the letter trom the Arrow Municipality it was considered that the subject (the granting of a subsidy towards the prospecting of quartz reefs) being of such importance to the district that it was advisable two of the members of this Council be appointed to confer with the Arrow Municipality on the subject; and that the Town Clerk write accordingly and enquire the hour and place for such conference. Mr 3. Wenkheim's request to lease section 34, Block VII, was refused, the Corporation not being inclined to lease the same at present. The Town Clerk was instructed to forward a report of the sanitary state of the town to the central Board of Health, and, if necessary, to request assistance from the local medical men for that purpose. The Town Clerk was granted leave of absence for two months, dating from the 16th instant, Cr Crofts consenting to act in his absence. The following accounts were passed for paymentH. Wardlaw, (cartage), £2 4s; ! J. Bryant, (day labor), £1 15s; W. Murish, (day labor), £9 10s; P. B. Boult, (poll clerk), £1 Is; Government Printer, (Ordinances), £3 19s 6d. Messrs Gillies and Street's account was not dealt with in the absence of detailed 1 account. Mr Spence's was also held over ' until his return from the Head of Lake. 1 A meeting of the Bye-laws Committee was appoiuted for Tuesday next, 7.30 p m. Cr Crofts brought before the Council the subject of the delay in the construction of the approaches to the Arthur's Point bridge, i and proposed: —" That the Town Clerk write 1 to the Government calling attention to such : delay, and that, owing to the dangerous state 1 of the old bridge, traffic was at a staudstill." Seconded by Cr Boyne, and carried. The tender of Mr H. Mauders, for assessing the town property for the current year, ' for the sum of £l2 10s, was accepted,, provided that the same be completed within the space of two months from the present ' date. 1 No tender was accepted for the construc- ■ tion of the stone wall in rear of the Breakwater, as it was considered necessary to appoint an inspector, and'call for fresh ■ tenders. ' It was resolved that the rate of assess--1 ment for the current year be Is in the pound. Notice of Motion. By Cr Crofts —That the Government be ■ communicated with in reference to the 1 Reserves originally withheld from sale, viz., Acclimatisation, Quarry, Plantation, and ! Water Reserves, together with town sections | that the same may be legally vested in this 1 Corporation.
