—_ Passengers who made week-end flights from the Sockbnrn aerodrome included Mr TV. Doubleday, Mrs ©• Richards, Mr O. E. N. Smith, Miss S. Mayne, Mr H. M’D. Vincent, Mrs S B. Vincent, Mr E. J- Tucker, Mr A. Tucker, Mr TV. H. Taylor, Miss M. Taylor, Miss A. E. Forsyth and Miss T. N. Hanmer. The Board of Trade will meet representatives of the South Island Potato Growers’ Association on Thursday in Christchurch, to confer on various matters relating to the potato-growing industry. Tho North Canterbury delegates are Messrs I). Goode (Marshland), TV. J. Walter (Mairahau), Morgan Williams (Ohoka), James Bailey (Prebbloton), and P- Hennessy (Spreydon) The Hon J. G. Coates, Minister of Public Works and Defence, made a flight over Christchurch yesterday afternoon, with Captain Euan DicksonAt tho end of the flight, when 1500 ft above tho aerodrome at Sockburn, Captain Dickson asked the Minister if he would lilco a little stunting. Replying in the affirmative. Mr 'Coates experienced the thrill of a loop, a roll and a side-slip, the latter from a height of 1000 ft, landing in the grounds by the hangars. Mr Coates was delighted with his experience. The first meeting of' the newly elected Council of the Scottish Society of New Zealand was held in. their rooms on May 12. Chieftain A. E. Thomson. in the absence of Chief A. TV- MacG'illivray, presided, and welcomed the newly elected councillors. The election of officers for the session resulted as follows: —Chief, John L. Aitkon; chieftains, George Buist, A. E. Thomson, J. B. M’Dougall; honorary treasurer, G. A. D. Sutherland (re-elected); librarian, D. H. Pullar; honorary British correspondent, A. TV- MacGillivray; auditors, Messrs TV. M. Gormack and Alex. Clark.

An early sitting of the Magistrate's Court was held at the Police Station on Saturday, presided over by Mr V. G. Day, S.M. Six men, charged with drunkenness, were convicted and discharged, Evelyn May Fluerty charged with having escaped from the Salvation Army Rescue Home on May 13, was convicted and ordered to return to the Home. Frederick John Elmes was charged with having stolen, between Arthur’s Pass and Staircase, a box of cigarettes, valued at £1 Bs, belonging to the New Zealand Government. The charge was dismissed without prejudice, police witnesses not being in attendance .

In connection with the recent Harbour Board elections, at which Messrs T. D. Boag and J. Storey were returned, a petition has been presented that the election should be declared void. The grounds of the petition are:— (1) That the successful candidates wero not properly nominated, tho amount required to be deposited by the candidates not having been lodged when tho candidates wero nominated. (2) That a proper roll was not compiled and deposited ns required by Vne Act. (3) That certain persons on the roll were improperly refused voting papers. Tho case for the petitioners is beingconducted by Messrs Duncan, Cotterill and Co. An inquiry will he held at the Magistrate’s Court by Mr S. E. McCarthy, S.M., on Wednesday, .May 26. The matter of erecting a new post office at New Brighton was discussed yesterday by the Hon J. G. Coates, who visited the borough in company with the member of tho district (Mr D. G. Sullivan). The present post office is vary small, and the borough has quite outgrown its accommodation. The’Dcpartment has agreed to erect a now post office, but the residents wish that iti should he erected at the corner of Un'on Street and Seaview Road, instead of on the old site. The Minister promised to visit the borough bolero coming to a decision, and yesterday l.e inspected the old building and the new site, and met tho members of the Borough Council. Air Coates agreed that the present .building was much too small, and he was impressed with the necessity for securing the_ new site, but said that it was a question of cost. After the inspection, Mr Sullivan drove the .Minister round the borough, and he was greatly interested in all lie saw.
