SPORTING.

NEWS AND NOTES. There was a general exodus from Riocarton yesterday. A number of trainers with horses engaged at the West Coast meetings started on their trip, while others left for the south, taking horses for the Dunedin Jockey Club’s meeting, many of them to go on to Wyndham and Invercargill at the conclusion of the racing at Wingatui. As a result-, Riocnxton now presents a doserted appearance, and there will be very little stir on tho local trades during tho next fortnight. G. Murray Aynsley has had more than his share of bad luck with his team this ■season. A few weeks ago he was looking forward to a trip south during the holidays with six horses. Then Warlove got a poisoned leg, and though she has made a good recovery, sbo is likely to be backward after a spell of idleness. With her recovery, Wardaneor has gone amiss, and he can be written out of all engagements, while tho two-year-olds, Reproachful And Jazz are both lame. As a result, though the team for the southern tour inol'ades Warlove, Algidus, Glentanner, Reproachful and Jazz', ,the last-named pair aro not likely to be at their best. Rossini is a notable defection from the list of acoeptors for the Auckland Railway Handicap, for which Mr G. D. Greenwood’s Derby winner had ruled as favourite for some time. His stable companion, Karo, continues one of tho popular fancies for the Auckland Cup, but doubts have been raised lately as to whether she will be a competitor, the suggestion being that she may be reserved for a race over a* shorter journey. Simonides, who is the favourite for tho Auckland Railway Handicap, can claim a great record for consistency. He opened last season with two unplaced performances, after which he was eight times in tho money, wliile he has been placed on each of his six appearances this season. Thus, he has an unbroken string of fourteen races, without once being out of the money. He won four times, was second seven times, and third three times. Gloaming, Silver Link, Moorfotfl, Right and Left, Dunedin and Spanner have been entered for the Kelburn Plate and the Waterloo Stakes (now six furlongs) at the Wellington Racing Club’s summer meeting, and in tho latter event Surveyor, who has boon freely nominated for other events at the meeting, is also entered. Mr A. F. Laurie, of Gisborne, who races Bonuie Heather and Oantabile, has purchased from Mr T. H. Lowry a rising three-year-old filly by I* inland The Hague and the brood mare Trebelli, by Birkenhead—Cantatriee. Trebelli is a young more that should throw first-class stock if properly mated. Reports from Auckland state that Red Ribbon and Battle Song are lame, and both of them are regarded doubtful starters in the Auckland Oup. Present indications point to Vagabond starting favourite for the Auckland Cup, while Simonides may head the market in tho Railway Handicap. H. Gray will have th© ride in each case. / The Hurunui Turf Club has received very satisfactory acceptances for its meeting on Boxing Day, and visitors are promised a very pleasant day s outing.
