A WOOLSTON COMPLAINT. The Woolston Borough, Council has (received complaints regarding smells arising from a manufacturing plant at the Woolston Tanneries. The . Woolston Town Clerk reported to the coun|cil last night that he had written to I the District Health Officer concerning Itho complaints. The District Health Officer reported 'that he had ascertained that the trouble was due to fumes of hydrochloric >ncid, but that the Woolston Tanneries authorities were taking steps to make alterations which would overcome the pniisanca. and if these were not successful they proposed transferring the (■works elsewhere. If it was purposed [to manufacture hydrochloric acid on tho tanneries premises, a permit from the local authority. concerned would have to ho obtained. .The existing permit was only for the manufacture of sulphuric acid. . ' Mr C. M. Ollivier, manager of the .tanneries, said that his company intended making application for permission to manufacture hydrochloric acid sand sodium. He would be obliged if itho Mavor and councillors qguild visit |the works and have explained to them the process, tho causes of . the complaints and tho measures his company was taking to overcome any possible cause of future nuisance.

Councillor L. Hart said that quite /recently ho _ had passed by the tanneries at night, and the odour had been most unpleasant. Ho thought that’the council shoultl accept the invitation. Councillor T. N. Champ said he did not wish that the tanneries company should he embarrassed, but if a nuisance was being caused the matter should he dealt with drastically. It was decided that the council should visit the nlnnt at three o’clock pext Saturday afternoon.
