FARMERS' UNION.

[Pur Press Association.] WELLINGTON, August 2. The Farmers' Union Conference elected the following officers :■—President. Sir James Wilson; vice-president. G- W. Leadley; advisory committee. Messrs B. A- Campbell. T. Moss, JBoddie (North Island), H, D. Vavasour, G. Sheat,. J. M'Queon (South Island); treasurer, Mr W. J. Birch. Tho conference passed a 'resolution urging a substantial increase in teachers' salaries, also asking tho Government, to provide farm schools for the education of all rural workers in the science and practice of agriculture. A resolution was passed expressing appreciation of the Parliamentary Committee's report upon the meat and shipping trusts and urging the Government to see comprehensive legislation passed in the ensuing session, in order to givo full legislative effect to the committee's recommendations. Remits were adopted that the Government should be strongly urged to take proper steps to organise < the labour of the country and discriminate in conscripting lahour from essential industries: that as farmers were given to believe that the British Government had promised the New Zealand Government certoin interests in Pacific island phosphates, and we now understand some large syndicate has purchased,those interests, we therefore ask that the New Zealand Government make inquiries; th*t this conference approves of a scheme by which the producers and farmers' co-operative companies of the Dominion could own ships, and eventually dispose of their own produce; that the Government bo urged to raise the price of wheat to at least 7b Gd a bushel for coming season, as under present conditions it cannot be grown profitably for less.
