SPORTING.

NEWS AND NOTES. A. start will be made to-day with the Otahuhu Trotting Club’s meeting, at which several horses trained m Canterbury will be competitors. Acceptances for the Forbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting will close on Monday. The Hororata Racing Club, one of the oldest racing institutions in Canterbury, will hold its annual fixture on Saturday, December 2. The club has gone on quietly, over a long period, providing sport, for residents of the district, as well as for many visitors from Christchurch. For the approaching meeting the club lias received a fairly good list of nominations. Quality is not particularly well represented, but the fields slioulcl\be well to the o verage and there should he some decent, racing. The pacing mare. Galindo Belle, who has been in the paddock for some time, owing to the effect of a kick, is again in work, and the mare will probably he. raced at 6omo of the Christmas and New Year meetings. Two promising maiden pacers are at work at Addington. Ono of them m a full-sister to that good paCer Capriccio, and the other a full-sister to Cora Dillon. The fast pacer, Cora Dillon, since running at Oamaru on Labour Day, has been having a spell, but she is to be put into work again this weekThere is n large number of young trotters and pacers at present m work on the Heathcote course. Orderdown. a winner on the second dav of the Winton meeting, is a four-vear-old hv the Clanrnnnli horse Glenculloch, who has a few fair representatives in training in Southland. Air P. P- Neagle’s well-known brood mare, Heavenly Twin, died recently in Hawke’s Bav, from the after effects ol foaling. Heavenly Twin was a sister to Canteen.- by Castor—-Vivandiere. by Musket—Gorgi, and she was the dam of Theodore, Diavolo, Evadne, on Mosley and Sarah Grand. Recent English files brought news of the-Great Foal Stakes, one mile and a, quarter. The Alanton trainer. A. Taylor, started two horses, Eseomb and Grosvenor, the former being sent out favourite, but Grosvenor beat him easily by a length and a'half; Grosvenor was bred, by liis owner, Air ETattersa 11,- being liy Cicero from Sceptre. This was Grosvenor’s first success. . Pa.lamon, who won _ the Winton Stakes on Wednesday, is a three-year-old colt, by Pallas—Shawnee, by St. Ambrose-—Savanna, by Stepniak—Seashell. Palamon is a first foal, his-dam being a sister to Showano, the darn of and Kilbrogan. . Last season Shawnee was mated with Bomform, who is very much in the limelight at present, on account of the doings of his three-year-old son, The Toff. The opinion is expressed that Bee would have won the Aloonee Valley Cup but for her saddle shifting. She may return to New Zealand shortly, but there is an impression in Melbourne that her owner is not anxious to retain her, being of opinion that she may be overweighted in tho Dominion. An Australian writer is responsible for the statement that- Mr H. G- Taylor is nearly sure to sell Zuland before returning home to New Zealand. It is reported from the north that T. F. Qaitilivan, who formerly trained Mr W. G. Stead’s horses, benefited to tho extent of £3OOO as a. result of Sasanof’s win in the Melbourne Cup, Air Stead laying him "that sum to nothing about the Martian gelding. Air S. W. Tathnm has’appealed to the Racing Conference against the decision of the Wellington District Committee in awarding the stakes in the Horowhenua Cup to Master Moutoa. It is claimed that Abater Aloutoa did not comply with the Rules of. Racing on the subject of weighing in. The penalty condition attached to the Waterloo Plate, the weight-for-ag© race at the Wellington Racing. Club’s summer meeting, this year provides for a stone penalty for winners of 1500 sovs. Last year the maximum penalty was 101 b for 1000 sovs. . Kilboy, Sasanof and The Toff have already incurred the full penalty, while Desert Gold is still a long way short of the amount necessary to place her on an equal footing with the three-year-olds. Sergeant C. J. Paterson, who has been in camp for the past, eighteen months, has been discharged as medically unfit, and will spend a few weeks at Rotorua to recruit his health. Before he enlisted Air Paterson was recognised as a good judge of racing and he frequently acted as a deputy stipendiary steward, in which capacity he will probably be employed again by the Pacing Conference at some of the Christmas and New Year meetings. Place money is quite an important item at some meetings in the Dominion. Last season BlacknJl earned £1055 in stakes, despite the fact that he did not win a raco. Egypt was beaten in all his engagements at the recent Riccarton carnival, but he captured £7OO in prize money, as a resultof finishing second in the Derby, Jockey Club Handicap and Stead Memorial Cup. According to a report from Australia, Reva.l was sold on the eve of the Yieteria Racing Club’s, meeting and he return to ihe Dominion. Reral was formerly owned by Mr Carlisle Studholme. who died suddenly in Melbourne this week, and it was in the colours of. the deceased sportsman that lie won the Great Easter Handicap at Riccarton in April. Two AVaikauae bred three-year-olds have been racing well in Queensland recently. At -Albion Park, Venerable (Achilles —Alonarda) won a Division Handicap, and Watt a (Achilles-—Step-ina) finished second in the Park Handicap. AUSTRALIAN RACING. There bad been a loss of. about £ 10 on last year-s meeting. Tbe balance-sheet was adopfed. Mr L. Oxley moved that the race meeting ehould be discontinued this seaion. Mr J. Penny reconded the motion. Mr E. Fox'said that it would -be a pity to give up the meeting for a season, as it was a purely local institution. The trouble was to secure, a. suitable orte, as so many Saturdays were already , taken up by other functions. They could not get a permit for any other day which was near to some other meeting. All December waa taken up, and it seemed aa if they would have to wait until after harvest. . . On being put to the meeting tbe motion W. Shellock moved that the meeting should be-held on December 28, provided a permit could bta'obtained for that date. Aftor confidetrablo discussion, the’ motion was carried. It, was then decided that the date was too near Christmas, aud would not suit the business .people at all. ; . .\ , -. ' ( The motion was rescinded, and on the motiou of ?Mr. J.
