ENROLMENT REGULATIONS

CLOSING DAYS. To-day will the last day for the enrolment of the first division of the National Reserve, and to-morro« will be tho last day for tho enrolment of the second division. A flood of applications for certificates has been received at the Christchurch Post Office, and curiously enough, at least one man in every six has changed his address since tho National Register was compiled. But not one application in fifty is received from men who are not already on the National Register, and in many of these cases the applicant has just come of age. The applications already total 10,000 at the General Post Office. To-day the officials expect a groat of applicants, and the office will J 0 opon from 8 a.m. till 8 p.m. The samo" hours will be observed to-morrow for the second division. THE APPEAL BOARDS. [FrtOM OtjW COTIRSSFONDF.XT.] DUNEDIN, September 14. The Hon J. Allen (Minister of Defence) who left for the North this morning after a short visit to Dunedin, states that tho final appointment of members of the first four appeal boards under the Military Service Act will bo fixed up lato this week or early next week. It lias been decided that magistrates are to act as chairmen. As regards the appointment of .other members Cabinet has given consideration to several names, hut is resolved to make further inquiries before making the final selection. Tho names ot additional applicants will bo submitted to Cabinet this week. THE BALLOT. [From Oct*. ConnEsrosTJEVT.] DUNEDIN, September 14. Tho Government will not be in <'• position this month to impose a ballot for compulsory enlistment of Reservist* in the first division. It will probably be the end of October before machinery to enforce compulsion is in working order. . ,•.■,,, Unless there is a decided boom in voluntary recruiting, which is not • generallv anticipated, there is a prospect of a substantial shortage for the Twenty-second Reinforcements.
