THE NAVAL WAR

THE CQRQHEL. FIGHT. MONUMENT TO REAR-ADMIRAL CRADOCK. MR BALFOUR’S TRIBUTE. By Telegraph—Press' Association—Copyright. (Received Juno 18, 7.30 p.m.) LONDON, June 17. A monument to Rear-Admiral Sir Christopher Cradock was unveiled in the York Minster. The cathedral was crowded. After the “Last Post’’ had been sounded at the end of the solemn service, Mr Balfour unveiled a beautiful marble and alabaster memorial. He said:— 1 ‘ Admiral Cradock’s deed was not one of uncalculating daring but it was inspired by a higher wisdom than calculation, and a higher courage than daring. He attacked because he knew that tho German fleet in the Pacific was far from its dockyards where it could refit, and that it had uo friendly bases open. If it suffered damage its power for evil would bo utterly destroyed. Admiral Cradock was unablo to foresee the battle at the Falklands. Ho only knew that the German squadron was a great peril to the Pacific while it remained efficient. Ho judged that his squadron would be well sacrificed if it destroyed the power of the hostile fleet. If lam right in estimating Admiral Oradock’s motives there was never a nobler act, unsuccessful though it was, than the Coronel fight. Admiral Cradock and his comrades have won an immortal place in tho roll of naval heroes who have built the Empire.”
