Sir Douglas Haig reports:—The vigorous bombardment of our trenches between the river Douvo and Wieltjo at midnight was accompanied by two ineffective discharges of gas westward of Massines and the Wytschacto ridge. There was no infantry attack. We carried out successful raids near tho river Lys and near Givenchy, and we successfully exploded mines near Hulluch and northward of Arras, and also seriously damaged tho underground workings in tho vicinity of LoosCANADIANS AT HOOGE. The “Telegraaf” says that people arriving from Courtraj state that the German losses in the Canadian counterattack at Hoogo were severe. They saw many trains of wounded and strings of ambulance cars. Seme of tho latter standing in the lluo dc Lille dripped blood. The German reserves at Courtrai were rushed into the fight. They declare that tho Canadians fought liko demons. THE BRITISH ARTILLERY. LONDON, June 16. “The Times” correspondent at the British headquarters says that owing to a week’s incessant rain infantry work has been almost impossible. The recaptured ground reveals that the British artillery fire latterly was of the most deadly description. The Germans were unable to consolidate the position, mount machine guns or remove the supphes, stores and aminuiution the British had left there.
