LUMBER FROM PACIFIC SLOPE. GOLDEN SHORE ARRIVES. Early last month it was reported that the ■American schooners Golden Shore. Defiance and Annie Larsen ha<l loft Pacific Slope ports, practically simultaneously, for Lyttelton, and oonsoouentlv much interest was 'centred! in shipping circles as to the respective sailing qualities of the vesseh. Unfortunately the Annie Larsen was severely handled in a gale when a few days out. and she was compelled to return to port waterlogged, and as the result of the accident the contest was confined to the Golden Shore and the Defiance. The race concluded yesterday, for at sunrise the signalman at Adclerly Head observed a schooner heading under full sail for the port, and as she came closer to view it was seen that the vessel ■was the Golden Shore, which "bad left Port Everett on December 9 for Lyttelton and had only occupied fifty-four days on the long .icurney. Although the Defiance left Gray Harbour some days previously and also had an advantage of about 'two hundred miles, iiio sign of her was seen by thos 1 ? on board the Golden /Shore, which entered the Godley Head about 3 p.m.. and some time later was granted pratique by Dr C. H. Upham, port health officer. J- conversation with a reporter. Cantnin O. T. Olson stated that, with the exception of encountering a westerly sale when four days out. the voyage had been uneventful. He crossed the rqnntnr on Janusry 3 at 4 p.m.. and the first glimpse of New Zealand was caught off East Cape on Tuesday last. From this out variable winds had been experienced. Like other American vessels, the Golden Shore has a large portion of her cargo stowed on the deck. In all she has about 716,000 feet of assorted Oreeon nine on hoard, but as there is a possibility of the vessel goirS on to Wnnganui. it is not known what amount will be discharged here. The vessel previously visited Lyttelton in September last. Captain Olsen, who has succeeded Caplain Henricksen. previously visited Lyttelton some three years ago in the Alumna, and has associated with him Mr C. Nelson s>s mate, and Mr C. Pedersen, second oft fleer. The Golden Shore will be berthed in the inner harbour this morning. SHIPPING NOTES.
