TROUBLE OVER A WINE TREATY

Much rioting has taken place in tho Douro province, owing to a clause in the treaty of commerce between Britain and Portugal allowing the southern districts to export cheap wine under the name of " port." Douro producers demand that the treaty should not be ratified, and " port" should be restricted to fullbodied port. One thousand rioters, armed with scythes, axes, rifles, bludgeons and dynamite bombs are invid-ng the towns, burning public buildings, making bonfires of records, mobbing railway stations, smashing wine depots, and breaking casks of alcohol from the south. The trocp3 fired on a mob at Lamego, killing thirteen.
