NEWS AND NOTES. At the beginning of this season it was understood that the Wellington Racing Club contemplated the erection of a new grandstand at Trentham. The ■war caused the work to be hung up, but the club has had a very successful season, and as a result the committee 13 now considering a comprehensive scheme of improvements Latest news from Wellington states that the mishap sustained I y T/adogn while competing in the Trentham Gold Cup was less serious than was at first thought.

J. Farmer, who formerly had charge ot Air W. -E. BidwilFs horses, lias decided to set up as a public trainer at Awapnni.

A. Oliver has not done any race riding for some time, hut he expects to ho back in tho saddle at the Egmont meeting next month.

Zion, a double winner at the Alanawatu meeting, is a half-sisster to the smart galloper Play-off. Their dtun, Pommery, is a daughter of Johnny Faa, by Trefoil, a halt-brother (by King of Clubs) to Alikado 11. and Lady Zetland.

The proposal to send the Auckland steeplechaser Soots Guard to Australia to race has been abandoned. His sale, which was believed to have been assured, has fallen through.

Ivilrain broke down hudlv while running in the I/ongbum Handicap at the Manawatu meeting, and he will do no more racing for some time; in fact, it may be decided to permanently retire him. In the summer of last season Ivilrain wa-s a good horse, but he never seemed to quite recover from tho effects of an attack of strangles, wliicli laid' him aside more than a year ago. It is reported that R. Longloy liae purchased from G. Jones, of Gisborne, a four-year-old gelding by Multifid.

The tbree-year-old Pariform has got over his recent operation, and at present he is running out at Awapuni. He is not likely to go into training again until the winter is well advanced.

The steeplechaser Bercola has returned from his unsuccessful trip to Sydney. He would probably bo benefited by 1 a spell, as lie has been strung up for more than a year, with little rest. J. Mitchell, who is training the Highden team during the absence of G. Price in England, has seven yearlings under his care. Three of them- — Nysfcad (Finland —Pas Seul), Cease Firing (Field Battery—Truce) and Sunny Climes (Field Battery—Perolina)—have alreadv been broken in. The remainder will have tho tackle put on them during the next couple of weeks. They are a gelding by A arco from an unnamed daughter of Bloomer, and geldings by Advance—Betsy, Field Battery —lnamorata and Field Battery—Celaemo.

Merrimax. by Aferriwee—Maxima, ran second to Bibbenluke in the Hurdle Handicap at Sydney_City Tattersail's meeting on April 17. Boh Soult, by Souit—Clocbette, was among the winners at tho Adelaide Racing Club's meeting this month. Olochette, who is a half-sister to Beldame and Chime, is by St Leger—Campania (dam of Aliss Delaval), by Robinson Crusoe—'Campanula. The stallion Count Witte, by Menschikoff—Problem, was sold in Sydney this month for eighty-five guineas. Count Witte. who is a half-brother to Solution, was a first-class performer as a two-year-old, winning the Canterbury Champagne .Stakes and the Manawatu StakesTthe only races iu which he started.

Tim Wanganui breeder, Air G. Al. Currie, did not experience good fortune at the Sydney, yearling sales at Easter, hut lie has since sold the colt by King Rufus—Eulolo for 400 guineas. Tho King Rufus—Aloira-ma-chree and tho fillies by King Rufus—Holy rood and colt by King Rufus—Carmania will be trained at. Rand wick by P. Nolan for Air Currie.

It was reported some time ago that the Australian horses Clontaft and Benvitas wore to be sent to New Zealand for the jumping meetings- but there seems little prospect of that now. They returned to Melbourne after the Australian Jockey Club's autumn meeting, at which Clontaft ran disappointingly, while Benvitas was unable to start owing to an attack of influenza. Tho sensational English mare. ScopIre, toaled a filly to bwynford in Fel>ruarv and was to bo mated with ’William Rufus. So far Sceptre has thrown nothing approaching her own class, and as with most mares that have greatly distinguished themselves on the turf, it seems unlikely that she ever will

The Welkin was represented by another two-year-old winner in Sydney this month, when Colugo beat twenty opponents verv easily m the Youthful Handicap at City Tattersall’s meeting. The Welkin is proving a. high-class sire so fuT as early speed is concerned.

Commenting on the sale of yearlings at Sydney at Easter, tb© “ Referee ” remarks that Mr J. Samuel, offered one of his yearlings for sale, the proceeds from which were to go to the Belgian Relief Fund. The sum of fifty guineas was realised, but it. was a, noteworthy feature that none of the richer or more important breeders had a yearling to spare for the -same purpose.

The death took place in England last month of Lord Oadogan, a prominent sportsman. His horses won many good raoes, but the only classic event credited to him was the Oaks of 1885, which was won by Lonely, a daughter of Hermit and Anonyma. Among successful performers recently bred by him was The Onrragh, whose successes last soaMui included the Prinoers of Wales Stakes, Another good one bred and raced by the deceased was Red Pern. He was a prominent two-year-old last season, and his.nominations, which included the Two Thousand Guineas and St Leger, were voided by Lord Cadogaivt; death.
