DEFENCE NOTES.

The District Headquarters of tho Canterbury Military District announce that it has been found necessary to increase tho prices of the following articles of clothing and equipment:— Boots, from 14s to Ids a pair ; ground sheets, from 7s Gd to 9s each (if lost); S.B. bolts, from I2s to 25s each (if available).

Tlie following standard scales of rations per man per diem will bo adhered to in all future ramps and for troops in forts:—Bread, ljlb, or biscuits, fib; fresh meat, I.JLb, or preserved meat,' lib; butter, 4oz; cheese, 2oz: coffee. Joz; Hour, loz; jam, 4 ok ; condensed milk, i-tin, or fresh milk, i-pint; oatmeal, 2oz; onions, 4oz; potatoes, lib; pepper. 1-32-oz; salt, joz; sugar, 4oz; tea, loz: In camps where rations are nut issued by. the Arniy Service Corps, an allowance of 2s per man per diem will be allowed in lieu of rations in kind, including both day of arrival and departure. and officers commanding units will make their own arrangements for feeding their men.

PROMOTIONS. Sergeant-Instructors W. Bates, H. L. Frank, J. FT. Levy and (L Chapelton have been promoted to be-staff sergeant-majors. Second-Lieutenants F. Davison, L. R. Maefarlane, C. W. Free and D. T. Wood, of the Ist Mounted Rifles (Canterbury Yeomanry Cavalry) have been promoted to be. lieutenants. Lieutenant H. M. FfitcL. of the Ist Canterbury Regiment. Inis been promoted to captain, and R. H. Mot-tram and R. L. (I. Fleming have been appointed second lieutenants on probation.

'• Major J. G. Clayton, M.Tt.C.V.S. (Veterinary Corps), has been promoted to lieutenant-colonel.

Major A. G. Cottrell (Xo-.v Zealand Garrison Artillery) has been appointed to command the coast defence 1 mops at AVestport, and Captain X. P. Adams has been appointed permanent camp adjutant wliile employed at the reinforcement camp at Trentham. Captain William Diamond (X.Z.M.C.) has retired, and has been granted permission to retain his rank nud wear the uniform.
