Incidents occasionally happen that arc calculated tt> make the average sceptical Britisher wonder whether the shopkeeper is sincere when he protests that the only reason for stocking German goods is that the purchaser will have them on account of cheapness states the '' Auckland Star." In a. leading Auckland store recently, a customer asked to be supplied with enamel cups. On every one of the articles tendered for his inspection was the inscription, ''"' Made in Germany." The purchaser pointed this out to the shopkeeper, and a.sked for a British article. There was no choice in the matter. Even in such a common article of manufacture the buyer, who was desirous of cutting out the enemy eoods, could only be supplied with the ■erman article—the only one stocked. Truly, we are a. patriotic people! A rather exciting incident occurred at the dance given by the committee which controlled the Waitotara Maori sports meeting at Easter, states- the " Wanganui Herald." During the evening the takings for the day, about £67. were missed, and a most oareful search failed to discover the bag. Of course, it .was only taken for a joke. The committee accepted the explanation and the matter ended.

The first meet of the South Canterbury hound; this season in the Geraldine district was held at Hilton on Monday. Farmers in the Cheviot district are still anxiously hoping for rain. While it is too late for any strong growth of grain a good fall of rain would enable grain lands to be ploughed, which is impossible at .present. The distribution in Sydenham of a card urging the electors to vote for the Citizens' Association ticket at the municipal elections has caused rather mixed sensations in tho southern ward. The ticket includes two Labour candid dates and an Independent, and electors who received the card did not know whether to regard the move as a joke or as a deep-laid scheme. It was the subject of considerable comment, chiefly of a humorous nature, but the candidates concerned regarded it seriously, and last night they were at some pains to explain that_their names had been used without their authority. This declaration was made by Messrs Hunter and M'Culloufdi, who were speaking at the Sydenham Band Rotunda, and when the card was brought under the notice of Mr Dobbs. he also raid that he had not given authority for the inclusion of his name.

THE BABY "TRIUMPH" IN COMPETITION. A combination of circumstances has hitherto operated against the entry of " Baby Triumph *' motor-cycles in competitive events in New Zealand. In the first place the supply of these machines has been limitedj and in the second place. a.ll save a very, few of them have been purchased for purely business purposes. Some weeks ago, however, the "Baby Triumph" made its' competitive debut in this_ country at a hill climbing contest at Wanganui, where it filled first place in the lightweight class. Last Thursday the "Baby Trinmoh " made its second appearance in the Flexibility Hill-climb-ing contest at Timaru, where riders of the machine scored three first prizes and two second prizes. These very satisfactory results go to prove the truth of our claim that the "Baby Triumph" ia the simplest, most reliable, and most efficient light-weight machine on the market. Several big commercial firms ha.ve purchased these machines for the U6e of their travellers in suburban districts. The "Baby Triumph" is a 2J h.p.. twospeed ' geared, single-cylinder, two-stroke motor-cycle, of exceptional lightness and simplicity. We are now in a portion to give immediate delivery. Trials fiven to prospective purchasers. Adams, ■td., Agents for Triumph Motorcycles, High Street, Christehurch. (G. Brown, Christehurch Representative; I>. H. Edgar, Ashburton Representative.) 1898
