PRIZE DISTRIBUTIONS.

CHRIST’S COLLEGE. Tho prize distribution ceremony of Christ’s College Grammar School was held last night in tho College gymnasium, Bishop Julius presiding over a large attendance of scholars and their relations. The members of the governing body of tho College and tho masters wore a so on tho platform. The acting-headmaster, Mr A. E. Flower, in his report, stated that tho school had bcqn through a period of trial and experiment which to his mind was of very giea* value. It) had shown that it was not possible to imprint on tho College the direct* organisation of a great English public school without paying due regard to local conditions and customs. It had shown that a very large amount of its work had been earn™ out on right lines; and there was no doub. in the minds of those familiar with past methods and traditions that many of them would have to find a place again permanently in its work. During the last two term" work had been carried on witin a 3 little change as possible, but with an unsettled staff, many of whom were working on lines unfamiliar to them, and certain parts of the work had undoubtedly suffered. In spite of the urgent necessity for rearrangement in some directions, the best interests of the school had, he thought, been served by a period of quiet work, and necessary aderations would doubtless be made beforo next term begins. Most of the changes and doings at the end of last year were announced at commemoration in February last. Since then Mr Napior had left to take up work at Otago University; his place was then taken temporarily by Mr H. V. Bowe, and he was eucoeeded by Mr J. F. D. White, on old boy, who had rendered good service during tho past two terms. Mr Fell arrived to take over the modern languages at the beginning of the second term, and since then the staff had remained unchanged. Mr Matthews had gone into the school house a? house tutor to assist Mr Carter, who had taken charge of the school house at tho request of the governing body during tho last two terms. The prizes were then distributed, after which the Bishop gave a short address, in tho course of which he oongratu.ated the successful prize-winners, and said that he was espccialy pleased to present tho cards in place of prizes to those who won events at the annual sports. They all knew that tho funds for the sports prizes had been given to the Belgian Fund, and Christ’s College had only done the same as many other colleges throughout New Zea and. He referred to tho anxious times which tho College had passed through during the past year. He knew that the college mighv have suffered shipwreck during those troublous times, and if it had not been for tho untiring efforts of the acting-headmaster, Mr A. E. Ftowcr, and the masters—(loud applause)—who lied carried the college successfully through such a trying period, there was no know.ng wbat might have happened. He hoped that the echolars would give, an enthusiastic welcome to the new headmaster, Mr Blanch, who would arrive ebortly. He wae not altogether unknown to the college, and under his guidance the college would continue to prosper. The following were the prize-winners: Latin and English.—Form VI—B. G. Blunt. £. E. F.
