The Public Service Commissioner, replying to the published statement that officers of the Public Service have been refused leave of absence in ordor to enlist in tho Expeditionary Force, says the statement is incorrect. With the exception of three officers, whose cases wero deferred for a few days and one whose services could not be spared till early in the New Year, every officer who dosired to enlist had been granted leave of absence, and his position would be kept open for him till his return. In addition, tho Government has arranged to pay the superannuation deduction of officers absent with tho forces. Up to the present 417 officers of the Public Service have been granted leave for duty with tho Expeditionary Forces, and iS2 for duty at the forts and othor places in connection with New Zealand’s land defences. Cable advice has been received at the Defence headquarters of tho death of Private John Archibold Campbell, Wellington Infantry Battalion, at the Aboassia Hospital, Cairo, on tho evening of December 14. Deceased, who was 27 years of age, was a horse driver, and came from Napier. The next of kin is Donald Campbell, Welleslev Road, Napier
