FOR THE CHILDREN.

PLANS FOR OPEN-AIR HOME APPROVED.

A meeting was held in the City Council 'Chambers yesteiday afternoon, between the Open Air Home for Children Fund Committee and representatives of the Hospital Board, to discuss tho proposed ,pians for tile building for winch the money had been collected, The Mayor (Mr H. Holland) presided. At tho request of the chairman Dr Blackmoro outlined the plans. He said that the site-proposed for the ; lira bui.ding was above tho present home pn tho’Cashmero Hills and would pvnvide accommodation for eight children four boys and four girls. This building was designed for tuberculous cases on tho 'lines of the present sanatorium, and its estimated cost would be between ,€IOOO and £3OOO. The building to come, continued tho, doctor, would ho considerably larger and would be built on the same lines. The detailed p.ans for it were not before the meeting, as the question of site was not yet settled. Dr Blackmoro said that there was a good site within about five m nutes’ walk of the present sanatorium It was of the same elevation, easy of access and comprised about 1000 acres but the owner would not part with any of it for the purpose of a site for the Children’s Home. At present the land was lying idle and there were no buildings upon it. Obviously it was being held for speculative purposos. Anyone who held ground when it was needed so badly for such a purpose as the committee intended was not, declared Dr Blackmore, acting in a very patriotic manner. (Hear, hear.) On the motion of the Mayor it was decided that the Open Air Home Committee. having inspected the plans *tn the Children’s Home, provided by tho Hospital Board, approves of-them and that, the chairman of the Oppn Air Homo Committee should be authorised to pay over to tho Board tho mrnry collected ns soon as it was required.
