NEWS AND NOTES. >■ Nominations for tho spring meeting cf tho South Canterbury Jockey Club ■will close to-night at nine o’clock. I The Geraldine Racing Chib’s meet- ' ing, which was held this week, proved jvery successful in every way. There I was a largo attendance each day, and the totalisator investments, though Viewer than those of last year, were very satisfactory, considering the prevailing conditions. The club, in addition to .'donating £SO to the Patriotic Fund, j arranged to give half the profits from the raco meeting to the same object, 'and there should be a substantial bal(ence to divide. Parable has a creditable record over hurdles, having won tho last three jumping events in which she has started—two at Ashburton and one at Geraldine. The field she met at Geraldine yesterday was not high-class, • but she dispose*! of her task in very attrac- ! tive fashion. i Peg’s form at Geraldine when 'she I won two races this week was above the | average, and she looks like proving I very useful this season. Her last previous success was gained on January 2, at the summer meeting of the Auckland Racing Club. i Several »mart maiden trotters were ween out at the Geraldine meeting tnis (week. Emilias, who was successful on the first day, is a three-year-old broI tlier to Emmeline, and he created a ! particularly good impression. Drum Major, one of yesterday’s winners, is a speedy pacer by Advance, one of the , best among the many good horses 6ired l by Prince Imperial. 1 The Southland trainer, P. T. Hogan, j lias removed St Aidan, Peerless, Pretty Jane and Golden King to Wiugatui. They will probably race there as well as at the South Canterbury meeting next.month, before they return to InJ rercargill. The first foal of the season reported in Southland Jr a filly by the imported horse Rokeby (son of Rock Sand) from Camille, by Tasman—Cobweb. GERALDINE RACING CLUB. There was a marked change in the weather lor the second day of tho Geraldine Racing Club’s meeting ytsteid&y. The wind turned to south-west, beooming vstv cold, while several showers of raiu fell during the afternoon. The attendance, though not so large as on the first day, wiff well up to the average. Tho totalisator investments were £6124, making a total for the meeting of £18,882 10s, compared with £15,138 10s last year.
