FALSE ENTRIES.

CORPORATION CLERKS IN COURT. [Per Pbes3 Association.] DUNEDIN, September 25. At tho Supreme Court, John Towler Gambling and George Frederick Lyons came up for sentence. Both were formerly clerks in the employ of the Invercargill Borough Council. They had pleaded guilty to six charges of making falsa entries in the books of accounts. Lyons also pleaded guilty to two further charges of failing to account for moneys to his employers. Evidence was given as to Gambling’s mental condition. Dr Hogg said that the prisoner was looked upon as a simpleton, and did not appear to realise the gravity of the situation. Ho was sixty-two years of age. His total defalcations were £4O, and prisoner had made restitution to the amount of £3O. Judge Sim said that it was an improper thing for a Corporation to put such a man in a position of trust. He ordered prisoner to come up for sentence when called upon. Lyons, who was a tramways clerk, was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment. His total defalcations were £27.
