FIFTY YEARS AGO.
j(From the “Lyttelton Times” of i - September 24, 1864.) I Christchurch Town Hall.—ln the consideration of Public Works Estimate on Thursday evening, Mr Hall stated that the building now known as the old Town Hall in Christchurch had been used by the Government so frequently since its erection that bad any charge been made for its use the following -bill would have to be paid, viz.:—For sittings of the Supreme Court (4.60 days), £1449; for elections (42 days), £132 6s; for Bankruptcy Court (10 days), £3l 10s. Total £1612 10s. The building has been erected about eight years, but it has only been of late that very constant use has been made of it by the Government. ... In the present Estimates Mr Hall asked for a further voto of £SOO for the completion of the new Hall, which was granted. Railway Trains.—At.the request of a large number of passengers travelling on the Lyttelton-Christciiurch railway the lessees havo again altered their time-table. The alteration will - take place on Monday next. Addition to Our Horse Stock.—We yesterday saw a new entire horse come into Christchurch from the south. He' appears a very fine horse, and is the part' property of Mr A. Smith, who brought him over. “Young Samson,” as he is appropriately named, is a strong, upstanding, handsome bay horse, and should, we think, prove an acquisition to our farmers. That horsebreeding has been much better attended to latterly than of old, in Canterbury, is a fact which has extended beyond our boundaries, and we cannot but look with approval on the importation of a stranger of fresh blood.
