DOMAINS BOARD.
. ; ♦ YESTERDAY'S MEETING. The Christchurch Domains Board niefc yesterday; presents-Mr H. J. Beswick (chairman), Dr Levmge and Messrs J. Jameson, C. D. Morris and F. A. Anderson. The curator (Mr J. Y'oung) reported that during his six months' leave of absence he nad visited the botanic gardens at Sydney, Melbourne, Hojbart, Adelaide and Perth, the Peradeniya gardens in Ceylon, and-the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew. The trees and shrubs at Kew were very good, but the growth was not nearly so great as in Christchurch. He also inspected the botanic gardens at Edinburgh, many of the nurseries in the Scottish capital, the Glasgow botanic gardens and public- parks, and the Royal Botanic Gardens at Dublin. At Dublin he found a good collection of New Zealand plants growing wonderfully well. He had made arrangements with all- the principal gardens for the exchange of seeds and plants, and had brought back with him forty-three varieties of saxifrage. He had obtained designs and estimates for park fencing from the Glasgow Corporation contractor. The chairman, after the report was read, said that the chief business was to decide what was to be done with the river bank. Mr Young had come to the conclusion that the Board could not do better than to continue the grassed slope as had been done near the bridge leading to the acclimatisation grounds. He proposed to abolish the rock work. It was decided that the Board should adjourn to the Gardens.at 5 p.m. the following day to consider the question on the ground.
