A Press Association telegram from Timaru states that the Borough loan proposal to borrow £IO,OOO for street improvements was carried yesterday by 514 votes to 106. The poll > was unusually small. The Council is undertaking the works partly to relieve expected unemployment.

Detectives, O'Connor and Torrance yesterday arrested a young woman on a charge of stealing a number of bicycles. The exhibits in the case on view at the police station yesterday were half a dozen ladies' bicycles, recovered by the police from various repair shops and second-hand dealers.

Tho flower show held in conjunction with the Holy Trinity Church, Lyttelton, was brought to a conclusion in the Lyttelton Oddfellows' Hall last evening. The following additional prizes were awarded: Decorative table—Ladies, Miss Shepherd 1, Miss Shuker 2; men, J. Penrose L F. Sutton 2; girls or boys, Miss Cook.

Some time ago Mr W. T. M'Combs, M.P., has received the following telegram from the Hon F. M. B. Fisher in reference to the Local Elections Bill:—"Local Elections (Proportional Representation) Bill will in ordinary course receive assent of his Excellency about Wednesday next, but this can be done earlier if particularly desired." Mr M'Combs states that this Bill, which was introduced by Mr Fisher, is very much on the lines of the Bill submitted by the Christchurch City Council» and that Mr Fisher has offered to bring an expert over from Tasmania to conduct the first election under the new system.

The opening ceremony in connection with the electrification of the North Beach tramway line, which will take place on Wednesday afternoon, will be an important event in the history of Canterbury. It will mark the passing of the old steam service on the Christchurch tramway system. Horses nad to give way to steam traction, and now steam, in its turn, will disappear before the more modern power. The occasion will be commemorated by the North New Brighton Burgesses' Association and the New Brighton Trotting Club, which have arranged for a ceremony at the club's grounds. Many public bodies will be represented at the gathering, and amongst the guests will be Mr 0. W. Russell, M.P. A special car will leave the Bank corner, in Cathedral Square, at 2.30 p.m. It will go to the pier at New Brighton, and, returning will take the guests by the trotting ground, where afternoon tea will be served.
