NEW ZEALAND FLAG FOR
ANTARCTIC
PRESENTED TO SHACKLETON’S PARTY.

WELLINGTON, September 23. Mr Frank Hurley, late official photo-* grapher to the Mawson scientific expedition, and Who is now on his way to join Sir Ernest Shackleton s Antarctic expedition at Buenos Aires, was today presented by the Mayor of Wellington, Mr J. P. Luke, with 'a New Zealand flag inscribed “ Best wishes for the Expedition’s success, from the citizens of Wellington.’’ , The Mayor, in making the presentation, said that the flag signified the goodfellowsliip that existed- between Australia (Mr Hurley is an Australian) and New Zealand. He wished the guest and his chief every success in the journey and hoped that the work would be successfully accomplished. The capiqities of Antarctica, lie said, were unknown, and many believed that Ernest Shackleton would not only T99J& the Pole’but explore the whole of tna unknown portion. Mr Hurley expressed his sense of honour received by him at . the hands of the citizens of Wellington. He was to form one of a party of six who were to cross the continent, and the flag would fly side by side with the Union Jack and the Australian flai. Sir Ernest Shackleton’s expedition, would uphold the prestige of the British flag in, Antarctica despite the, slight clouding that had occurred when Amundsen forestalled Scott. He was going to take a kinema outfit across the continent, and make a pictorial record of historical value of the journey. He thanked all present and promised that the flag would fly at the South Pole and ho brought back to Wellington.
