(From Our Correspondent.] WELLINGTON, September 23. NATURALISED BUT SUSPECT. The plaint of a Christchurch man, a naturalised British subject, was brought before the notice of the House of Representatives by Mr G. W. Russell yesterday. This individual had spent ten years in British colonies and ob--1 tained naturalisation papers in 1909. j Notwithstanding this he had his pap- ! ers retained by the police and had to . report himself every day. The Prime Minister asked Mr Russell to forward the nian’s name to him and he would inquire and see what could be done. POST OFFICE ALTERATIONS. A suggestion has been made by Mr j H. G. Ell to the Postmaster-General : that in order to give employment the | Post Office site om Avon Road, Richmond, should bo put in order, and the commencement oi alterations to the Christchurch Post. Office should be hastened. The official reply is that it is not advisable to spend money at Richmond until the Department intends to build. The preparation of plans and specifications for alterations and additions to the Chief Post Office j is already in hand. | EDUCATION LEASES. | The Lands Committee has considered ' a large number of petitions sent in this ! session by holders of Education leases, who ask for the freehold. The Committee reported to-day that the matter was, one of policy for the Government to consider, but in its opinion legislation should be introduced giving uniformity of tenure to all Education leases. j SHIPPING FREIGHTS, i Ten days’ extension of time to prepare its report has been given the Snipping and Freights Committee, which has in hand the important task of making recommendations regarding the increases in freights announced by the owners of Home trade vessels. BROKERAGE AND LOANS. A return tabled to-day on the motion of Mr Russell states that the Dominion’s brokers in connection with the loans of £1,223,000 raised in London during the year ended March 31, 1914, were Messrs J. and A. Scrimgeour. The amount paid as brokerage was £3057 10s.
