With the exception of a few shops the business people of Palmerston North observed a half-holiday ithia afternoon and in consequence there was a large attendance at the match. Dolling went out to Ongley and missed, but Cornish lost tho opportunity to stump him. The next over Ongley, bowled Dolling. 28—2-£. M'kenzie was next and scored a single off' Ongley. Forty was soon up. M'Kenzie got two fours off Greer to the off and with several smartly run singles 60 went up, 70 soon following. Elliott went on in Greer's place at the topend and Collins getting three' off his first delivery 80 appeared. M'Kenzie was bowled by Ongley with a loose- one which he tried to hook and massed. M'Kenzie made 36, the total being 96. Waddy, the next man, began vigorously, and 100 soon was reached. Scoring was now very fast, smartly run singles and fours being features. Bartlett was now given a trial in place of Ongley. G. Greer caught Waddy off a mishit. Waddy had never been comfortable when playing Greer.. Trumper received a great reception as he came out to bat. ' Cornish was not " taking " Bartlett too well. Bartlett, beat Collins, but Cornish missed stumping him. Elliott badly missed Col-1 lins at long-on. When 190 appeared' Elliott was given a trial in place ofBartlett and caught Collins off his, own bowling in his first over. Collins made-his runs by fine cricket. 195--5—84. Armstrong followed, and 2UV went up. At 220 Brennand was put; on in Elliott's place and re-, placed Greer against the wind, his first delivery being, hit for -four, by Armstrong. Allingham just missed;, catching Trumper. The batsmen, were now well set and the score mounted rapidly. Trumper mishit one and Luxford made a good catch at fineleo\ 269—6—76. Crawford came in , and Bartlett was given another chance with the wind. At 310 Allingham was put on against the wind and Hodder at the other end. With the score et 320 Crawford should have been run. out, the wicket-keeper badly missing the ball. Greer went on at 3do still against the wind, and bowled Crawford. 340—7—29. Armstrong was 68 at the tea adjournment and resumed with M'Gregor, Ongley bowling. Greer beautifully caught and bowled M Gregcr. 350—8—7. Mailey followed. Webster missed Armstrong at long-on off Greer. With a Jour to leg off Ongley Armstrong readied his century,, bringing 410 up. The score rapidly mounted. At 460 Brennand and Luxford were put on, and off Brennand M'Lean caught Armstrong at long-ott, with the score at 454. The batsman received an ovation. Laver was last man and scored a single.
