NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIPS. [From Our Correspondent.]

BLENHEIM, February 18,

The second day's carnival in connection, with the New Zealand Championship meeting: was held here thi3 evening. The weather was fine but overcast, and, there was again a record attendance of spectators. The 220yds breast stroke was the first championship to be decided, and it created a good deal of interest, as Atkinson was expected to lower his own previous reoirci. Atkinson, Poison and Cookson set ' off together, with Dean close up. Atkinson pushed the pace hard, and at 103 yards led Dean by a yard, with Poison and Cookson close up. Poison moved up a little, but Dean came up with a dash and for fifty yards led Poison. Atkinson kept out of their reach and, continuing at a dashing pace and swimming in. great stylo, increased his lead. The last lap saw a great sprint by Poison, who at 200 yards caught Dean and, swimming well, finished about fifteen yards behind Atkinson, with Dean third and Cookson fourth. Atkinson received a great ovation when it was announced that he had lowered the world's record to 3min "sec. All the. Canterbury men received a round" of applause when it was seen that they gained first, =econd and fourth places, each with standard, out of six starters. • The haif-mile New Zealand Championship proved a good race. Canterbury's hope rested in Hill, who, after his fine- performance in the mile, was expected to got. close up. . .Atkinson was a starter, but owing to the race being swum soon after the breast stroke, he was compelled to give up at COO yards. Hill, Champion a.nd Sinton made the pace, and swam almost together up to 400 yards. Hill kept up well and stuck to the two Aucklandors very well. Champion pushed the pace for two laps but gave way to Sinton to make the pace. Hill was not to bo outdone, for he saw the move and gradually went up and for some distance he and Sinton were together. Champion now saw it was time to make his move and at 600 yards he .led by about three, yards from Hill,, with Sinton about five yards away. Champion kept his pace going but Hill stuck gamely to. it. Champion increased bis : lead while Sinton dropped back considerably, and as Champion finished he lapped Sinton. Champion finished amidst tremendous applause about fifteen yards ahead of Hill, who was loudly cheered on his fine performance. Champion's time of 12min 27 4-ssec was ,10 l-ssec under his previous record. Hill's time was given as 12min 42jsec and Sinton's 13min lOroc. The inter-club event. 100 yards, did not bring any luck to; the Canterbury team. Jerred and Geddes -were the only two to pet a., chance . in. the final, but ■ they found the handicap' too severe. The diving was again good and Poison and Annand, both of Canterbury, secured first and' second places. : Two water polo games were played. That between Canterburv B and Wellington was far better than that between Nelson and Wanganui, Considering that Canterbury B team only had one game it speaks -well for them that a- combination like Wellinston could only put up three goals. ' The Canterbury team played a splendid .defensive .ramo. Bryant in goal came in for a ecod deal of i corisTtttuktion ■ on his' firie stopping of some .really hot shots. ■...■ "Wellington did not bv ariy means play .tip , to, expectations and" their'combination was risrht off. The other game.. Nelson aid V/aiiganui, was awretched exhibition. It lasted'about thirty minutes and fouls were far too numerous.
