EAST COAST RAILWAY.
NEW CONNECTION SUGGESTED. [Per Prsss Association-! AUCKLAND, February 18. A third proposal is likely to enter the contest of routes,for the East Coast railway. The new route, which ; s claimed to be far Jess expansive and considerably more beneficial, to. the ■province generally than.- eitheri the Rotorua or the Paeroa schemes, proposes to strike in a direct line from Tauranga to Matamata, on the Auck-land-Rotbrua railway, opening up an immense area of Crown lands, and tapping the "bush-sickness" country at Mamaku. The new proposal is meeting with great support in the "Waikato, and an influential deputation of..public men, headed by,,Mr ;A. E. Manning .(Mayor of Hamilton) explained the scheme to the Prime Minister and the Hon "W. H. Herries, in Auckland to-day.
